Alrighty Folks!

Here is a split new song, recorded in 3 hours on Sunday...mixed last night / tonight.

First proper mix...check it out and let me know yer thoughts...

www.thedesmoinesriot.com/dharmafire.mp3

This is a new song from me and the band...got our guitarists new guitar (a tak) my guitar via the Korg (tho Im gonna redo it with the new Marshall ;-) .... different style to our old stuff....

Anyways, as I say - very much first decent mix I have done of it...I have a thing or two I THINK I should change but happy to get some feedback from the good people from HRC !!

Cheers guys, yer input is, as always, much apprecited.

P.S. Basic recording setup as i always use...done on the VF160 then into Cubase when I got home!

Coco.

That is different for sure. I had to listen real quiet tonight but will give it a loud go tomorrow evening when I get home. Interesting tune for sure. Cant wait to gear it with the new amp on the track. Almost had a country feel to it in places.

Great vocals on this one, Coco ! I like how the electric kind'a harmonizes them on parts . Nice, smooth mix for a first-approach .

You say that you used the VF160... was this done 'live', with everyone going all at once ?

Hey Noize - cheers for the listen man. The new amp aint on this (yet) but it will be this week. This is the work of the AX10G ! Alas, its a holder track ... when I recorded it, didn't have the amp but now I do, it'll be going right on there by way of the DI ! Nicee.

Cheers bud

Hue - cheers also, for the listen...indeed, our singers best vocal performance I reckon...my vox aint on this one (though I might add some this week as backing). The guitar playing the melody / vocal line was done (I must confess) as a way of avoiding me to trying to sing the harmony part I couldnt reach so, I just played it ;-) !! hehe.

The VF160 was used (in the rehearsal studio) for tracking purposes only. We done the drums / rhythm guitar first, bass, then all vocals. I done my parts at home in teh studio to save on time in the rehearsal studio....then (after YEARS of MANUALLY recording from the VF160 into Cubase then syncing it up, painstakingly), I have discovered the unit has a "backup" feature...it dumps all the WAV's to the CD writer for ME !! DOHHHHHH....if I had just read the darn manual 2 years ago !! Still, better late than never... ;-)

Thereafter, I fire it into Cubase and do ALL the mixing/effects and editing...I just use the VF160 for tracking....much prefer the Cubase functionality for mixing though I would add, I did do a mix once on the VF160 and the inbuilt reverb and compressor are quite good...indeed, not bad at all.

Cheers again buddy

Coco,

Nicely done! I'm only listening to it on crappy little laptop speakers right now, will give it a more suitable listen when I get home.

I have to agree with all of the comments above. The vocal is top-notch. The lead guitar is tastefully workrd into the mix. Drums sound very professional.

That VF160 has certainly turned out to be a great tool for you! I'm glad you finally figured out the part about dumping to CD...I should have told you sooner!

I can't remember your set up...are you using something that lets you record 16 simultaneous channels? (I use the Behringer Ultragain Pro 8)

In any case, you certainly got it down. Repost when ye got yer Marshall on there, and then it's definately going on to the iPod!

Hey Jim

Good to hear from ya again my man!! And cheers for the listen and comments as always..much appreciated.

I am also quite pleased with those drums too. Seems to get better each time I do it (still using just a single B1 condenser and 2 x 58's) ... works well though I thinks. Possibly due to edit time in Cubase too but all good!

Aye the VF160 is tremendous..Im just using the 8 preamps built in (3 for drums) 1 x bass, 1 x rhythm guitar and the rest for vox .. I Then do my parts at home ... sorted!! Glad I found that backup feature tho!! Man, its cool as.

Will repost for sure..cheers man.

CptTripps - cheers buddy..appreciate yer time too!

All the best

Yes, this has the power to please my ears. I really like the guitar sound you got coming in at about 12 and a half seconds. Your vocals are great as usual. I sent you a PM about that actually, so check it out. The hard panning let me know that my sweet spot was off, so that's a plus :) haha. Overall I really enjoyed this. I can't really comment on like frequencies within the mix though, cause I am still learning my new monitoring set up.

Hey, I like this. My only critique is that some of the guitar parts might be panned a bit too wide. Otherwise, it sounds nice.

Good work Coco!

Oh yes, the little chorused or whatever part in the intro. Very nice indeed. And I gotta admit that the vox are pretty dang good. I do have to agree on the panning as well being just a tiny little bit wide, the electric kinda stands out a bit. But on the other hand it is a nifty kind of feel to it. Maybe bring the electric track down just a tiny bit during its louder parts early on. As the song move on and during the chorus it isn't really that noticeable. I am gonna have to listen a few more times but I like the tune for sure. Nice direction you guys have turned with it.

This is really different for you guys coco, sounds great. Real nice sound on the accoustic, and the song really gets to rockin' when all the rest comes in. I agree the vox are some of the best your singer has done, this style seems to suit him well. Great to hear some new material from you I always look forward to it!

Loki/Coolo/Noize/Olddog and Tony!!

Cheers for the listen and the feedback guys...VERY much appreciated for sure!

Loki - I sent ye a PM regards yours...kinda dinged the hard panning in the next mix, re-recorded the guitars and changed a lot of dynamics ... gonna repost a new version soon for ye all!

Coolo - good to hear from ye my man!! Indeed, the panning comment is spot on ... resolving for next mix (along with some other changes too) .. cheers for the plauds my man!!

Noize - yer spot on my man. Panning was WAY too hard methinks...also, that guitar was just to in yer face (come from the AX10G) So, I recorded the Marshall ... didnt come out as good as I hoped but will EQ the probs .. trouble is 2 big bloody speakers (different speakers I might add) ... with 1 mic ! Shouldve used 2 and maybe a condenser at the back too .. man, its LOOOUDDDD!! Kicks *** tho!

Olddog - hey man, good to hear from you too!! Seems all me old muckas coming out at once here! Good indeed to hear yer feedback always. Glad ye liked it ... I am making a few changes but the essence should remain the same (I hope) .. again, cheers for the plauds buddy!

Tony - my man, glad ye noticed that ! That was the sound I Was using for a good while but alas, new amp and that one has just (kinda) been dinged a bit! Still remains on lead parts but thats it....glad ye liked it tho. And always, good to hear from ya and cheers for the feedback!

ALL YE GUYS - good to hear from ya, thanks for your time and also thanks for the words, feedback and suggestions!!

Im gonna repost a new version, new guitar (mine) - the acoustic is staying as is! New backin and a few other cool changes I thinks...when I do, I'll let ye know!

Intro seems much "hotter" not sure i like it as much-when the song kicks in though she's a rocking. the bass shines through wonderfully. I can't add much except at the end- when its just vocals and acoustic, pan the acoustic to the middle more to support the vocals, then pan out as the rest of the music kicks in. thats my thought- good stuff.

coco, my man, don't mean to be "that guy" but the panning seems very wide once the vocals come in with the accoustic and the rhythm guitar (especially the rhythm guitar in the right ear).

you have to understand I'm listening on headphones so that exacerbates the issue though...

Love the bass though! Tonyd is spot on, I think.

Love it Coco. Don't take this the wrong way (as it's a compliment..) but I hear a little Stuart Adamson in the guitar counter melody over the chorus. I like it. I love the feel.

Good one.

I agree the panning goes a little wide yet when the main verse starts. I keep the acoustic centered until the electric kicks in then pan just a bit less then you are. Otherwise I love the new mix. The electric gets a tad loud though when the chorus kicks in, maybe tame that a bit as well. Vox are sounding splendid though as I stated before. Did you add a chorus harmony part now, sounds like it? I'm gonna have to give it a better listen maybe tomorrow. And oh ya, I agree with coolo on the bass as well, very tight and killer sounding.

Yep, nicely done indeed. I'm liking this tune more and more. I like the electric tone you are getting, and the level seems pretty good now as well. I like the way the song has its quiet moments and then kicks some booty as it comes back in.

Again, nicely done coco.
