what would you guys recommend for some good tom mics. so far im using sm58's to do it. Is there any kind of mic under $150 that you think could do a better job at getting the sound of a tom better then a sm58?
as of now i have a pair of RODE nt5's for overheads, a sm57 on the snare. a shure beta 52 on the kick. i need some decent tom mics.
what do you guys think?

Jan 23, 2007 12:29 am I have used sm58's and they were pretty good. Now it's the trusted 57's Perhaps one day I will get some clip ons, but if you use the 57's then they can be used for other stuff as well - making it cheaper!!!

Jan 23, 2007 03:31 pm Audix D2, going on ebay under $100 (About $130-150 from online stores) and I thought the recently posted recordings of them sounded fantastic.
Samples were in this post...

P.S. I agree with the 57 being more versatile, but if your looking for tom mics specifically (as I am) I think they would be a great choice.

Jan 23, 2007 03:49 pm I've heard that SM57s are a little weak on toms. Never used one for that purpose myself, but I've heard people around here say that their results with a SM57 on toms was less than stellar. If my luck with an SM57 on kick is any indication, they don't excel with deep instruments.
Probably with the right EQ treatments they'd be workable but there are probably better mics out there specifically for toms.
I remember somebody really complimenting a specific mic for toms, maybe it was the Audix that the Cap'n suggested. I'll look around and see.

Jan 23, 2007 04:02 pm Sennheiser's I think was something someone was praising awhile back. 421's?
Actually, just looked at their site, 421's have a new version. But there are also some other mics worth looking at if nothing else than their size.
Jan 23, 2007 07:22 pm Yeah, the 421 is suppossed to be pretty good on toms, but it's pricey.
As far as the 57's go, getting a great sound out of them will probably depend more on your pre-amps.
I use Sennheiser e604's, and I think they sound great. They're small, too, and come with nifty little clips.

Here's a couple of short clips with them. The first one is pretty much raw, with some slight eq. The second one has some crazy, experimental compression ratios on it, so take that into consideration.
