American Idol

It started in Minneapolis last night, which the judges called "Minnehopeless". They sucked. Minneapolis is a "rock band" type of music scene, and a very good one too...not much of solo type talent, but there were a couple.

Anyone else watching? It's Seattle tonight.

i'm watching every week.

saw the indian dude tonight. great voice quality. also like mr. afro.

randy is meaner this year. seeing jewell pass judgment was nauseating.

sometimes i just can't believe this show is even close to real. how can some of these people seriously believe...

but then they seriously cry. i don't get it.

Randy does have a bit more vinegar this year, Paula seems like her drinking/crug issues still exist.

I liked Jewel that night, she said more than most guest judges ever had and she had a couple very smart things to say I thought. I am not a huge fan of hers personally, though, other than I think she is kinda cute.

i didn't like her being on the show.

it was somehow exceedingly wrong--and embarassing for her, i thought--to be passing judgment like that. i mean, it just reduces her. i can't even explain how or why, but it was really clear to me that that was a ridiculous move on her part to keep company like that. it somehow actually 'hurt' to have to witness her passing judgment. to perceive that she could have negative opinions about others, and to voice them. it's presumptuous. it's tacitly admitting "yes, i'm great."

that's fine to do. after you're retired or something. here, i thought it came off as subtly bitchy.

of course she is cute.

OK, well, we agree on the cute thing :-)

I guess I kind of see what you mean, her reduced to a judge means her time has passed in the limelight...I can see your point...on the fence of whether I agree or not, but I see what you mean.

I thought some of the smartest advise/criticism given that night was from her. When one person said they were nervous and she said something to the affect of "hey, a professional rises above, you would play to a lot bigger rooms than this" was less codling and more matter-of-fact than Paula ever does...Randy has gotten snippy, and of course Simon never gives positive anything, he just criticises and belittles.

I don't know if it's just me but the rejects don't seem funny this year. I really felt sad for some of them, having no clue that they are really bad.

I feel sad more for the people who watch this show than for the people who are rejected ;)

Why, it's good entertainment...and there are some great singers that come through it...

I watched Minn, but missed Seattle. I've decided I don't like the preliminary stages. The people who are bad are not really that amusing anymore, and there's too much filler. I like the singing part towards the end better. The actual performances are fun.

maybe to you it is, and that's good... but too many people are so entrapped in the show that it takes over a part of their life, putting aside everything else to watch the show. they come to think that they have some connection with the people on it.. that's not it's biggest issue though. the bigger issue is this countries habbit of putting celebrities on a pedistal, and shows like american idle play into this.

american idle also encourages us at a society to laugh at peoples pain. when someone fails and gets rejected the majority of viewers will laugh. This is shown obviously by how much money is made by that one dude just being a comlpete ******* to people..

Well, sure, people also put down everything to watch Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, House, Survivor or whatever their favorite shows are. What you are saying about AI isn't new or different to AI, it's true to all reality shows, and all shows period...that's the power of celebrity, which I find is bad, but to put it all on one show is simply silly.

As far as laughing at people's pain, I can see your point there, though, almost all comedy is at somebody's expense...though often it's willing. These idiots put themselves out there, it's not like they are innocent bystanders. And a lot of it is staged as well.

i don't watch enough tv to know what the other shows you mentioned are... I just chose to speak on AI because for a while it was what hte biggest thign was. like the wow of tv... but my beef isn't soley with AI it's with all that junk.

If people enjoy it, relate to it, or simply relax to it, it ain't a bad thing...unless of course they sit on their asses and do nothing else but watch TV.

I have my pet shows, I love "House", I always watch "Survivor"...I enjoy them. AI is fun, I enjoy it. We talk about it at work the next day, opinions, laughs and such...

I only watched "House" once, and I loved it! That guy's a real prick, isn't he? I love shows like that, when guys act the way I wish I had the nerve to act.

Oh, yeah, and I watched American Idol for the first time ever last night (except times when I was channel surfing). I thought it was intersting, but very phony. They really edit it to make people look stupid and to make the judges look tougher and cooler than they are. I'll bet half of the time when they are ripping on somebody that the camera is just on the judges, and there's no one else in the room.

I wonder how many pop/rock stars of today (or yesterday) would even "make it to Hollywood"....

i used to be like loki. i used to totally make fun of this show. but a friend of mine insisted i keep an open mind and check it out last season, so i watched the auditions shows and got hooked. i'm not sure exactly how it is staged or fake, but some of it simply must be. the auditions are funny, but i somehow got hooked by calling in the first few shows that taylor or daughtry would ultimately win. after i made the pick i had to keep watching to see if i was right. turned out that although the music is bad, and in spite of all the flaws in the show and the trend, it ends up being watchable.

Based on knowing stories from a couple of the Minneapolis auditions, a couple of people were asked (told) to go back in the audition room and come out with something more dramatic like crying, swearing or whatever...the juggling kid from Burnsville was one that was staged...he apparantly left pretty calm and with an "eh, whatever" attitude and they said to go back and try again, coming out pissed or crying or something, so he did...and if you watch, you can see the cut from calm to not, it was a bad editing job.

Well seeing as I only watch a small handful of the stations in this house I can't say much about Idol other then I did step out to catch a bit here and there of the MN show. I gotta say I now now why I don't watch much TV other then Speed channel, Discovery, TLC, History channel and occasionally VH1 classics's. I will sometimes get sucked into what the kids might be watching like Comedy Central or cartoon network. Oh ya, and the channel that has nothing but soccer, or ftball as coco would call it.

Other then that I don't do much TV, I get to hear all about it from the rest of the household here.

i guess i have an old world look at tv, in that i really do believe it rots your brain and decreases your iq for the most part. stuff like tlc, national geographic, discovery and the like are well and good, and a couple shows on adult swim... but other than that it's all mindless drivel to me.

heh 'adult swim'... what's that cartoon about the metal band ? Death Clock, or something ? I caught an episode of that the other day... had a couple of laughs at it . Kind'a like a modern-day Beatles cartoon, I remember thinking .

i think tv creates alpha rhythms in the brain, and thus is nothing more than a fine way to relax, unless you happen to become addicted.

and db, you can't just call jewell cute. i think she might have a deity mother or father.

hehehe, yeah, I can appreciate that sentiment.

Paula is the one I have thought is hot since I was in high school, and she still looks pretty much the same. This year though she looks much older, like it's all caught up to her...I mean, I'd still hit it, but you know...maybe it was just cuz she was sitting next to Jewel that made me think that though...

I can't believe I just saw db say "I'd still hit it". I literally had to pick myself off the ground to type this after that.

Not that you're not allowed to have those sentiments, just that the phraseology of it is not what I expected.

I don't like American Idol. Their opinions are total crap normally, they judge on vocal performance yet I saw some of the mediocre people get through.

I watch Discovery Channel for random stuff, TLC for medical, Medical Channel, Military Channel, and Steven Colbert/Aqua Teen Hunger Force/[H]ouse.

hmmm, as far as tv goes, i love cartoon network, but alas i don't have cable anymore so, now i just watch idol on occasion, any sports that happens on network tv, local news on occasion, and seinfeld reruns. I kinda like survivor, and the unit as well.

neoific, i agree. some lousy people get through. it's essentially crap--they let people through who use completely stereotyped vocal runs. just hit a lot of notes and have a steady tone and it seems like you get in. so you're left with rooting for the best of the generic contestants. but i've found you can always find the person who annoys you least.

Yep, Paula is still hit-able. And from the looks of the video Herb posted it looks like she could easily be hit upon. I think she was completely smashed by the sound and look of it.

But ya, Adult Swim has a couple of good ones, ATHF is good for a laugh indeed. But Futurama, well if I couldn't hit Paula I would definitely hit Leela. One eye or not she is hot. but maybe its just the voice that gets it for me. Na, its the one eye thing I think that makes her hot.

Katey Sagal who does Leela's voice has still got the looks too,it seems a long time since Married with Children started, although the big hair was scary.Saw the Seattle auditions, crazy.A friend of mine went for an audition here(uk)and they all had to pass two auditions before the panel got to hear them.So nutters were getting through over singers cause that keeps the viewers entertained.

And ya, Hujambo I know it is Kateys voice and that is probably what makes the cartoon character such a hotty as well.

I think it's not about what's good but what the buying public wants. There are thousands of excellent musicians out there but few that excite the buying public like this kid does. I'm sure he'll get booted soon and walk into a deal (bad as it may be). Count on seeing him on tour to sell out houses. Those eyebrows remind me of Grocho Marx.

sanjaya shoulda been booted long ago yes. who knows whos voting him back every time. every song he's done sucked. i do have to say that i liked the one 'scream' he did in the middle of this week's song. and he managed to take a step towards not being so damn boring. other than that, though, i dont know how he's still here.

this may be the reason Sanjaya is still around:

The momentum is really building now as Howard Stern has his listeners onboard with this as well.

Some may find this to be a horrible thing. I find it quite amusing.
