OK so heres the deal. When i have my computer (laptop) and my monitors plugged in, i hear this horrible buzz through my monitors. I unplug my computer and the buzzing stops. they are both plugged into my firepod, and all 3 are plugged into a power strip. if i take my computer and plug it into a different outlet (across the room) i still get the buzz through my monitors.

how do i stop the buzz? would a power conditioner do the trick? or? haha

Before buying a power conditioner, I would check all connections and cables. Sometimes jacks can get loose, creating ground issues and such. 60 Hz buzzes can come from internal issues too, but check external continuity before anything else.

Yes, power conditioners are always a good idea. Can you recommend a high quality power shampoo? I have some dirty solder joints...

Send the monitors to me and I'll properly test them out for you... Might as well send the laptop too... Or check out:

Isn't Garnier a Furman product ? ; )

Clarifying question: What piece of gear in your signal chain, is ungrounded ?

I spent the better part of a year chasing down a 60cycle hum that suddenly appeared in my studio, and after making several changes, including adding a power conditioner, it ended up being bad wiring in my house, and one piece of gear(BBE) that didn't have a ground on it which allowed the hum to infiltrate the input-chain . I still have the hum, but without the BBE in the rack, it's only in the monitors and not loud enough to have an effect on mixing . If you have alot of rack gear, try a product called 'Humfrees' that are basically plastic washers that y'a put on the rack screws in-between the gear and the rack... that may/may not break the ground loop that you're hearing... worth a shot .

Good luck, man .

i'll chime in, are you sure the house is grounded? is there good ground connection on the outlet you're using. this can do it, certainly. That kind of goes along with the ground loop mentioned above. Plugging all devices into the same strip should alleviate that problem though.

I purchased a furman power conditioner for around 45$. MP8 or something like that. I'm assuming it's working well, but I know my house is grounded well, because they just put it in (the house) last year, and I can see the ground connections (2 of them) outside the house.

Try if you can, to plug them into a different part of the house, or in the garage if it's been built after the house. Or you could try them some other house, that's new.

Course, this would all be mute if your house is new(ish). Most new ones should be grounded correctly.

The first simple thing to check is the Firewire cable itself.

1: Is it a true IEEE 1394 6 wire firewire cable?

2: Is it a 4 pin cable?

If the 4 pin is the answer go try a 6 pin. I have read several issues on it and most, not all but most have ended up being caused by the 4 wire cable or a cheap low budget firewire cable. I had the same type issue with my USB 2.0 burner, it constantly crashed out during a burn. I was indeed using a cheapo cable. Switched it to a bit more expensive cable and viola, problem solved.

it has to be a 4 to 6 pin becuase the firewire ports on the firepod are 6pin and the only firewire port on my laptop is 4 pin....

damnit...

Not saying that is the exact problem so don't count that one for sure yet.

As for the power conditioner, on the cheap do't go too cheap. the Furman M8L is a good unit for around $70.00.
