You need to tell us what you want to do. Record midi, vocals, instruments etc. For vocals or acoutic guitar, buy a nice condenser mike and a mixer- I have the AKG precision 1000 mike, it works well. Also I have a Behringer mixer, they are good too. If you need software for you computer there are several good programs, you will get some more suggestions from others I'm sure. But I like band in a box and powertracks, from PG Music because they are easy to use. But cubase, cakewalk sonar, pro tools are all good. For a good sound card-audigy is good, the emu's are good, m audio is good. You will get some more ideas from others here too.
Good luck.

THanks you two for that information. I'm recording just vocal and acoustic guitar/piano music. I've been playing for awhile, but I've never recorded anything on my own pc, so I don't know how anything works. I suppose I'll learn as I go. But any information will be helpful to me. Thanks so much.

Also, Edbulmer, Can you give me a brief price range for your equipment? or on the equip i should buy? I would like to buy a condenser mic, maybe for like 150$< and then a soundcard, and a mixer of some sort, I don't know how much those are but I don't wnat to spend more than 400$, becuase I'm a college student; funds are limited. I just want some basic gear for recording in my bedroom. Thanks,

Hmmmm, 400$ on an interface and mic,and just skip the whole mixer thing. I'd get a decent interface that has 1 or 2 inputs and spend most of your money on the mic.

Tube condensor mic. Would pick up acoustics, piano and vocals very warm n toasty. Read nice reviews on them and considered it when recently shopping tube mics.

And a line6 UX1 interface. It only allows one input at a time I believe, but I assume that is what your shooting for right?

Anyway, that clocks in at $430 before shipping, pretty close to your range. Could have gone cheaper on the mic, but I think having a nice one will pay off for your recordings in the end.

OH hey thanks. I ended up spending around $600, but I got an EMU soundcard that came with a mixer. I also bought a Rode nt1a Mic for $200, i hear it's like the best mic you can get for that price. At any rate, i'll tell you how it goes. Thanks.
there will be lots more of me on this forum soon :)

Darn good mic for the price, have heard nothing but good things. Welcome to the world of digital recording, can't wait to hear some of your work.
