Audio for home recording

Hello. Right now I have a line 6 kb37 toneport. I'm looking to get rid of this and get a presonus firepod or an m-audio delta 1010lt for home recording.

I relatively tech savvy, but I'm kinda confused. The firepod plugs into your computer via firewire and then all of your mics and whatknot plug into it. Right? So for this one you need a sound card. Right?

So, the M-Audio acts as a soundcard. So I can play stuff on my computer through it. Also, the inputs on it are different looking. You just can't plug in your guitar straight into it can ya?

Anyway, I'm gonna be building a new computer, and I want to have a decent soundcard that is conducive to recording.

I would like to spend $500 or under on whatever I'm interfacing my mics and instruments with.

I'm confused, any help is appreciated.

The Firepod is a 'soundcard'... as is the 1010lt... both would do you fine as far as quality, and yeah you can plug mics and guitars(guitar pre-amps) into them .

What don't you care for about the Toneport, if you don't mind me asking ?

I love it. But, I'm gonna need more inputs eventually. Sadly, I will probably need to sell the toneport in order to finance a new computer/audio interface purchase. So, if I'm building a computer, I can just get a motherboard with onboard audio and not worry about getting a standalone audiocard besides the 1010lt or the firepod?

Do you recommend either the firepod or the 1010lt over the other?

as far as onboard sound, on a motherboard, ignore it. It's not worth much more than game playback, and such.

now, for interfaces, the two devices are pretty far apart.

The firepod has 8 preamps, which the 1010lt does not. only 2.

the firepod is firewire, whereas the 1010lt uses a PCI card, installed inside the PC.

The firepod is 500$, whereas the 1010lt is 200$. But, the 1010lt will need mic preamps, where the firepod wont, so there's that tradeoff.

I used the 1010lt for awhile, and was happy. I used a mixer in front of it, for it's preamps, which I'm doing again. (see my profile). I've gotten the ESI ESP1010 now, and am pretty happy with it, though I've not really taxed it yet.

I'm gonna say the the firepod preamps are probably pretty good, as presonus makes some pretty nice stuff.

Another item, the firepod can be used on other equipment pretty easily, but with the 1010lt, you can switch preamps (or mixers) if you want to upgrade, without swapping out the card (though you may want to, if you get good preamps).

I don't know if that helped you much, but at least gave you more things to think about =).

Yeah, I am probably gonna go with the firepod.

The firepod also seems more convenient because you can have it sitting out to where you can plug in your mics and stuff. Whereas the 1010lt sits in your computer case and has the connectors coming out. Maybe they are longer than I can tell from the pictures though.

nope, they're pretty short. I used a mixer, for preamps, then a Hosa 8 channel snake (1/4" TS -> RCA) to plug from the mixer down to the computer inputs. The snake cable never moved, so it was a one time setup.
