Alesis USB Multimix 8. Help please

Just bought an Alesis multimix USB 8, comes with Cubase LE. I plugged the mixer in, connected the USB, the PC (windows XP) sounded like it recognized it and installed Cubase. I started the Adobe based tutorial and when it I try to record nothing happens. I am basically unable to get any feedback onscreen from the mic. I tried changing from ASIO multimedia driver to the DirectX full duplex driver under device setup as recommended in other blogs but to no avail. I don't have monitors, just headphones and PC speakers. Any suggestions are welcome, thank you.
