Wow, and they even televised it in Iraq....yowza.

I was picturing a mob scene where they drug him around the city, hung him up and let the people have at him, Mussolini-style. Looks like he got off easy, as far as hangings go.

Peace to the victims of his tyranny.

George Carlin did a great riff on how executions should be televised in America. Pay per view would make a killing... heh. Let's face it, we humans are a bloodthirsty lot.

I think they were watching 20/20 and decided they really needed to interrupt a shitty program :) You see the relief the host felt when she had real news to talk about. :)

I did think it was strange in a creepy patriotic way that I was apparenty buying a new flag during his execution and putting it up when the news broke.

A different perspective:

Not to condone the man's actions.

Did he kill more people to achieve social order in that region than are being killed now as the tribes fight for supremecy?

Now that we done 'shocking a aweing' and have assumed a policing action, do we see that the tribes are learning well how to combat us as our fatility rate increases?

From Viet Nam we learned not to involve ourselves in what amounts to a cival war. We are worried about a cival war breaking out now. How does one define a cival war in a region where civil war has been the condition of government for over 4000 years?

That whole region is a pre-apoloptic version of Mad Max fighting for the juice.

At this juncture we are a relitively minor incumberance to politics as usual.

it's estimated that saddams government executed about 2000 people a month. So I believe that is more.

On "the Star Wars scale" of motovation, Darth Vader, Palpatine, and Jacen Solo were all seeking social order. The point being, "peace" and "order" are lies (especially in campbellian mythology) there is always transition and you can either help society or hurt society. Saddam hurt.

However, the mideast is extremely ****** up and has been for a very long time. Even the bible mentions how early christians were directed by god to not go east. :) And consitering their reception in Rome one should wonder how bad it was.

And I think what we actually learned from vietnam is conscripts suck... sort of like how one of biggest lessons fron Korea is that physical training helps a lot. The lesson from iraq will eventually be "jeep replacements" arn't "tank replacements"

consitering that DoD faces about 1000 noncombat deaths a year...about a third of which are probably alcohol related auto accidents, having an army sitting in the mideast with 1500 fatalities on a bad year is pretty good provided we can effect some positive change. Which I think we will if we stick to the origional "30 year occupation" which we wont. However there slso the heartless "strategic thinking" ie, china has been talking about taking it's 3 trillion dollars and putting it to work buying up energy reserves. However, if there happens to be an american army sitting on the oil field when it's needed guess whos going to be in a better position.

sorry to beat a dead horse, but, while i do feel he got what he deserved, i dont' think it affected anything...i mean, we've had him for a while now, and i don't really get off on the fact that he's dead now...alotta friends were all "wooo hoo!! ding dong the dick head's gone" you know, all excited and happy, but in the big picture, how is the very simple fact he's dead changed anything? is the war over? did we win? is the world a better place (yes without him in any kind of power, but i'm talking about dead vs. alive) i don't see the reason for any kind of joy...nothing has changed. his influence was gone after he was taken into custody.

and i can't believe ppl were all upset cuz someone was 'taunting' who the F cares? it's an empty gesture! the man is dead.
