they're both basically do the same things...i think bmi is more twards commercial cd's and ascap leans twards music for video....but these are VERY subtle differances....i've never published anything so i never bothered diggin' into the differances....both have huge buildings here in nashville.

They are companies that basically monitor royalties for your works...via radio streams, jukeboxes etc...

I chose BMI. I think they're basically the same, but BMI has the perception of being more targeted towards "indepdendent" writers/artists, and ASCAP is more focused towards "commercial" or "major" artists. With that being said there are definitely "major" artists on BMI and "independent" artists on ASCAP. I think i've heard that BMI monitors college/independent radio more closely and ASCAP monitors commercial radio more closely, but I've not actually validated that (so I'm basically just relaying rumors here...)

Coolo: yeah ive heard that as well BMI being more geared towards indepedant...but if all of my label's tracks are being played on the BBC which is europe's very own 'clear channel' than Id want to go with ASCAP cos most of our stuff is major....than again ive heard both are lackluster with international royalties...kinda stumped on this...leaning towards ascap but I havent really found enough members from either sides to pour out the pro's and con's for a good decision....

hmmm :/

p..s brian im gonna hit you with that track you were featured on sometime this week...i got your email sorry been awol

About 25 years ago, I remember playing in a band at a club where the owner had had some sort of falling out with ASCAP, and ended up refusing to pay them their royalties for live music. So he told us we could only perform BMI-published songs. How were we to know which ones were which? So we ended up just playing our regular set list. The whole thing struck me as quite funny at the time.

deeps, if you're worried about international, especially european royalties, you might want to take a look at sesac...
