Dec 02, 2006 12:49 am My personal favorite in that price range is the Rode NT1A. I use that one for all kinds of projects. Having said that, selecting a mic is a really personal thing. Plus if you have a bad guitar sound to start with, no mic is going to help. What is your setup as far as your guitar, amp, mic preamp and recording system? All of those things will make a difference in your mic choice.

Dec 02, 2006 05:25 am For distorted guitar I generally like dynamic mics better anyway. But yeah, what's the signal chain like? The rode reccomendation is never a bad one, and I've been using my AKG C1000S on practically everything and lovin it... haven't tried it on distorted guitar yet though. I'll give it a shot tommorow and let ya know how it sounds.

Dec 02, 2006 11:18 am the M-audio Luna and solaris work really well on cabs .
Dec 02, 2006 01:29 pm well i went to guitar center today and i got the rode NT1A, and i am quite happy. i also got the Mbox 2 studio bundle. the mic that came with it isnt that good but its okay. Thanks DieMusik!
all i need more is a good drum micing kit. i found a nice kit called the dp2, but guitar center doesnt have it. Will my new rode mike work?
And Loki tell me how that c1000s works on the distorted guitar

Dec 02, 2006 04:16 pm For micing drums, I'd suggest starting simple. A dynamic for the snare, a dynamic for the kick, and a pair of small-diaphragm condensors for the overheads. That gives you 4 channels of drum micing to start with. Recording a drum kit with 4 channels is complicated enough for starters.
I'm not sure which MBox unit comes with the studio bundle. I see 2 different MBox 2 units, one with 2 channels and one with 4 channels. Hopefully you have at least 4 channels on that unit or else recording drums will be a pain in the butt.
I could go on for hours about my opinions on recording electric guitar, but take the above advice that there is waaaaay more to getting a "powerful" sound than the mic that you use. There's plenty of reading here at HRC that'll get you educated on recording electric guitars. We've had 2 or 3 big and helpful forum discussions on that topic in the past year, so do some searching.
Good luck!
