Hi.I've read in several forums that it's possible to create a new OS partition within Windows without using the CD.
Computer Management (Local)
Disk Management
Right click Free Space in an extended
partition and click New logical Drive.
At this point nothing happens.Where exactly do I find this Free Space? Thanks.

Nov 24, 2006 09:19 am What free space? Partitions really don't do performance or anything as much good as they used to back in the FAT32 file system era. You are better off just getting a new hard drive and adding another one to your system. They are cheap these days.
Nov 24, 2006 10:00 am I have two HD's.
HD1[Windows/Internet]+[Sample Storage].
Hd2[Music Storage]
I need to convert this to
HD1[Windows/Internet]+[Windows/Music Apps]+[Sample Storage]
HD2[Music Storage]
I have a complete music OS saved as an Acronis back-up on HD2
How do I create a new partition in the present [Sample Storage] partition within Windows itself? Thanks.
Nov 24, 2006 10:35 am I dunno if this article will help www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=151 but I always have to chuckle at people that go to this length for such a task. The more logical approach would be the boot drive in a removable bay, one drive for www boot and one for audio boot, then two drives for your different storages.

Nov 24, 2006 01:49 pm You need to buy a program such as Partition Magic to split an existing partition, creating an unused partition to install the 2nd OS on. You can do it with Windows disk management but you have to delete the existing partition (loosing everything on the partition in the process) and then create new partitions from the free space.

Nov 24, 2006 10:18 pm I was gonna say the same as OD stated. You cannot create another partition on an existing partition. The only thing that will do it is as he stated partition magic. But I do agree as well that it is an extreme measure in these days of cheap HD's an removable bays.

Nov 25, 2006 04:01 am One other thing to consider if you do setup a dual boot system is it's not a good idea to use the same install(s) of the various programs your going to use with both OS's. So you really need enough drives to setup 2 complete systems ideally. You can share software installs but occasionally you can run into problems doing so.

Nov 30, 2006 08:57 am Hi.Many thanks for the info. How do I erase the D partition and create 2 new partitions using Windows Disk management?I have Acronis images of C and D on the second disk (E).I believe there are a couple of registry tweaks needed to completely separate the 2 OS,s.A complete music OS is also on disk E.Thanks.

Nov 30, 2006 10:22 pm Well the only way that I think will work is with the above mentioned Partition Magic. You cannot erase a partition from an active OS disc via windows as far as I know.

Dec 01, 2006 02:09 am The easy way to check is to open Disk Management (Administrative Tools->Computer Mangement->Disk Management) right click on the D partion if it's not a system partition (ie no system files have been installed on it) you should have the option to delete the partition. You will then have free space with which to create 2 or more partitions.
By far the easiest way especially if you want restore images to the new partition(s) is to use a program specifically designed to do so. I prefer Paragon HD Mangement as it includes drive imaging & restoring along with automatic resizing of partitions etc.
Partition Magic is now owned by Norton and cannot do image restores, you need buy an additional program to do that.

Dec 01, 2006 11:11 am Hi.In Disc Management Drive D is displayed as a Logical Partition within an Extended Partition. If I right click the image there is an option to Delete Logical Drive. If I do this will it leave the drive un-partitioned as it were or have I merely deleted data?In other words will the drive be in such a condition as to accept a complete OS?Thanks.
