Nov 15, 2006 09:33 pm as long as you have BFD, i'm sure there's good stuff in there, but if ya don't own/wanna buy BFD, i'd drive myself crazy knowing all the stuff it can do....there are books/cd's about midi drum programing that'll teach you how do sequence a more 'natural' sound, ofcourse that'd require a sequencer and approprate sampler, and samples, and good reverbs (at bare minimum).

HA! BFD stands for Big ******* Drums!
actually, you do need to already have a good sampler and sequencer to run BFD....i've had the 008 a few years ago, and it's great for drums...got rid if it on a guilt trip.
[quote]the sound of the Groove can be further humanized through the controlled randomization of velocity and timing.

ok i hate when ppl use "random" when in the context of drums sounding 'real'.....a drummer is not exactly 'swinging his time' and 'hitting the drums harder and softer (aka velocity)' in a random fashon....it's quite controled if done well, ya just gotta think like a drummer.
this can be done without BFD specifically, but it sounds like one heck of a good sample library couppled with some good reverb, and a cool user interface with tons of features.....but i've programmed 'realistic' drums plenty of times without it.....the real funny thing, is i think the drum track that is playing in the background on the video sounds rather 'electronic' to me.

Nov 15, 2006 10:17 pm So what, you sign up for TWO accounts and spam us with both of them? Pfffft.
You gotta be at least a litte more subtle than that.

Nov 16, 2006 07:26 am hmmm, this message and the last (which i deleted) both tracked back to greece and came within just a few minutes of each other...
I do disagree with WYD tho, you can add a lot of life to a sequenced drum line with minimal random velocity changes, not big dramatic ones but subtle ones...it works, is it human, no, but it's a HELL of a lot better.
Nov 16, 2006 03:17 pm ok i wasn't beein' real clear on what i meant...i'm sayin' a drumer uses 'velocity' for feel...when he's dooin' that, he's not hittin' "randomly"...he's accenting the eghth notes when playin' 16ths on the hats or something...so the velocity translation would be something like 120-88-117-90-121-89-119-88.... those arn't really random to me....random implys just schtick any 'ole velocity in there and it'll sound more realistic....my best friend does that and i hate it, it'll accent the wierdest stuff, and dosn't feel good at all.

Nov 16, 2006 05:53 pm Groove Agent has the "Humanize" knob. It works wonderfully if applied in moderation.
If you overdo it, it sounds like the neighbor who drops into your practice and says...."Ooh, I can play the drums....can I play your drums" and you let him because he's the neighbor....etc...Anyway...too er...human.
Nov 17, 2006 09:13 am yeah, i havn't really heard the newer stuff like that...i've got a hardware roland groovesynth, and it's got a 'groove' knob that not only applys/changes accents, it moves the quantize grid around, i have yet to hear anything i like from it.
