Portable WAV recorder. Suggestions?

Hi, I'm new to this forum but not to field recording. However, I feel I need guidance on my next purchase.

I'm looking for a new recording unit. I currently have a Sony MZR-91 MD, and while the unit is great, it's beginning to show it's age a little, plus the lack of direct file transfer is limiting at times. I have had full experience with the M-Audio Microtrack too (see my second post) and I'm loath to spend £300 on another similar device, given that newer mp3 units can now record directly into them. I would even consider MD again if it had OS X compatability.

What I want is something with line-in only (for my binaural mics with A3 adapter) that recorders straight to WAV format (lossless) and is Mac OS X compatible. I know iRiver did the iHP-100 a few years ago, but there newer models (and website) seem to be lacking in full technical specs etc. So it's hard to gauge the full usefulness of such devices.

Thoughts?

Welcome to HRC

Well there was just a thread on this as dB was looking for one as well.

But I'll tune you onto one I just found out about. Spec wise it looks really good with some good options. It is from Zoom, not the top of the line name, but making good gear at a reasonable price. They are now owned by Samson. Here is a link to their spec page. www.samsontech.com/produc...cfm?prodID=1901

It looks like it is going for around $299.00 US so it might be in your budget pound wise.

As for the MD thing. Mine is almost 10 years old now and is still my favorite for field recording. Although most of my filed recordings are not used in their natural state it has enough quality for my needs and is pretty durable and dependable. I'm not sure about that on the newer units. Although I just cuaght a peek of something Sony is releasing that might fit you need. I'll see if I can dig it up and post it here for you.

Well, heres an update.

I managed to get hold of an iRiver iHP-120 for £53 of eBay! First impression are very good, but the lack of being able to monitor levels during recording is a bit of an off-puter. However, all is not lost, as I have discovered the independently developed operating system called Rockbox (.org). This completely changes the interface and functionality of the unit 100 fold. It's also compatible with other mp3 recorder devices and makes for a vast difference in usability and functionality. The iRiver now supports full metering with gain control, advanced eq settings, customisable themes, support of loads of additional sound formats etc etc... Best of all it's free! So if you have an mp3 style recorder, the chances are this little baby could upgrade your unit with more useability. Go check it out!
