Saddam to Hang

Well, it seems he was sentenced to hang. The trial goes to appellate court, when they uphold the virdict he has 30 days and then he hangs.

Good thing, I think so, will it matter in the big picture, I doubt it...some other wackjob will take over as soon as US and allied troops withdraw...

Discuss.

It was pretty obvious from the start what the outcome would be. It hasn't really been a trial in the true sense. It's just been an erroneous justification process.

Hanging him will only create a martyr out of him so i can't see what good it would do. keeping him in some rat infested hole may be a better idea.

Take him to London Tower and re-use the torture methods live on TV, gruesome stuff.

I want to know which type of hanging...

The "drop" so that your neck snaps instantly...

Or...

The old "kick the chair" that leaves one to dangle...

I think yall are right on the fact that it will make no difference in the long run. Also the "martyr" statement is so true.

I don't think the martyr situation will come into play... though he acts as though he;s trying to win over the islamists... there was a good (Frontline?) doc covering journalists who imbedded with insurgents and they said the nationalists are pretty much done with with insurgancy, the islamists took over. Of course, most of the islamists are from iran or saudi arabia. The home grown insurgancy ended two years ago.

The islamic insurgancy is messier because they don't care about the population, the just want to destroy the government.

Yep, there will be riots and the like I am certain of that. Lots more bombs going off and the whole bit. But I also wonder if it might just hit home and send a message under the current that his kind will indeed pay in the end. And they will be caught if the mess with the wrong people. Not just meaning the US here, I think more of the world will start looking to this kind of punishment for those kind of crimes. And hopefully when the oppressed catch wind of what can be done, maybe they will join the revolt and put more of his kind out of the way.

I don't believe he will become a martyr. A normal trial, this has not been, because to find people that are peers and who are impartial would be a task that even David Copperfield couldn't perform. I think most of us knew the out come, mybe not the sentence but the out come was clear. I was reading the different European Union (who opposes the death penalty) leaders remarks that they believed the man was guilty for atrocities but thought the hanging was wrong. That’s kind of like asking to get paid for doing nothing or getting your cake and eating it too (don't get me on a rant about that analogy). I don't think I’d be too out of line to say that no country including my own has a perfect judicial system, but you try to do the best with what you have. I've seen the faces of these people and they are happy, sad, confused and angry. I've been greeted with nothing but respect from the Iraqis people (and no I’ve not been caring a weapon) and I’ve give the same. You could ask most everyone here about the verdict and you will probably get the same answer 9 out of 10 times. One last little thing: I don't join these little political rants most of the time, but this kinda stuff hits close to home for me, when I placed the ballot boxes out for the people to vote last year that was awesome, so there is some good that goes on over here (a lot of crap too). I love these threads because everyone has a right a privilege to say what they will and that I hope never changes because we all have our own opinion and what to share it.

Peace out

I don't know about this myself. I mean taking a life intentionally is wrong IMO. No matter who you are. For a couple of reasons. Hanging him seems rather barbaric. It will not change the past and it will not change the future (except for probably lead to more violence). And why should he get off so easy as death? He should pay for what he did by spending the rest of his days in some crappy prison. Hanging him gives him the easy way out. For all I know he will see this as an honorable ending.

Anyways, IMO killing leads to more killing and there is enough of that in the world without capital punishment.

Peace

I agree in theory with a couple points, for one, hanging is barbaric, and he may see this as honorable. That said, he will showoutwardly he thinks it is, but he has already shown what a coward he is.

As far as letting him rot in prison...to me, it's not about anything other than what it would cost the Iraqi people. Kill him, get him off the planet. I think some people forget what a horrendous person he is and how many thousands of people he has tortured and killed brutally himself. I think he should be crucified, cuz that would make him suffer.

That was a dark side of DB, I think I liked it.

He needs to die.

Yep - let him hang.

Anyone who fires chemical weapons at their own people and executes folk left right and centre with no real reason deserves to have no life.

...teaches his sons to kill and mame, allow his sons to go into anywhere and take any woman they want to rape, possibly killing the husband if they object...

Yeah, let him hang, slowly and painfully.

I have no problem with this. I actually assumed he would be beheaded in public like they do (or at least used to) in Saudi Arabia...

Not to go "Islamic" on anyone, but there is "bible" for the death penalty... It is *punishment*, and it is the states' responsibility to ensure that similar does not happen. Hanging is too nice, so is beheading... I say give him some of his own mustard gas he used on the Kurds & Iranians, and let him agonize a few months, then hang him until he almost dies, but not quite, take him down, *then* behead him. And let him see ya shoot him in the xxxx... Sorry, won't happen again...
