Hey I got a question with regards of dialing in a heavy sound. So basically, does anyone have any suggestions of getting a flat out heavy sound ie evanescence, linkin park, creed, without micing up a full mesa stack in your room?

Nov 01, 2006 11:34 am Yup, Line6 with cab and mic emulation turned on.
And as 40 said, dbl/triple tracking sure thickens things up.
Although, when I think of Flat Out Heavy I'm usually not thinking Creed *poke poke jab* :)

Nov 01, 2006 06:30 pm Creed did have some great heavy guitar sounds though.
But I agree on the multiple tracks of guitars. That works a charm for me every time.
Nov 01, 2006 10:34 pm while i do agree with the above, i gaurentee every example you listed used one or many tube amps turned up loud durring tracking.

Nov 02, 2006 01:49 pm Hmmm, good point.
Recorded in the studio recently.
Used two 57's up close (1 @ an angle) and one condenser a ways back on a marshall 1960A cab.
Also used a DI box for a clean tone while also routing through a Line6 PodXT.
So we had 5 channels worth of guitar tones to mix to preference and they indeed came out heavy.

I think that's the million-dollar answer right there. Modellers will get you close, plus they're cheap, portable, silent, and versatile.
But I'd almost guarantee that all of those artists used a Mesa (or comparable) stack cranked up in a good-sounding room, with good quality mics, into good quality preamps, and mixed and mastered by good engineers. There's just no replacment for it, or else nobody would go through the trouble to do it this way.
But, modellers will get you close. The most important thing in my opinion is layering multiple takes. Don't just copy and paste the same track several times...record a seperate performance for each track.

Nov 02, 2006 06:36 pm Tadpui and forty, Howd you get your avater's that size?
Nov 02, 2006 06:39 pm hehehe, they don't even know it yet...I'm coding ;-)
They were always that big, I just resized em with hardcoding...now the limit is 4k, whatever size, as long as it's not over 100px...or, that'll be the case soon anyway.
Nov 02, 2006 07:36 pm Thanks for the replies. So a DI box will clear up the sound from a pod decently, sounds good. I do know that Tremonti in the Creed days, used a clean channel from a twin reverb plugged into a Triple Rectifer. It sounds as if he is using the close to the same set up for alter bridge too. I dont know what kinda rig Brian Moody had with Evanescence.

Nov 02, 2006 08:20 pm Nice, I have a new Stew that is a little bigger. I'll have to have you check it out though. He is doing some sign language, if ya get my drift.

Nov 03, 2006 10:10 am On the DI Box, it was simply to catch a clean signal which in the end was split three ways. 1 Clean, 1 Pod, 1 to the amp which had 3 mics. Sorry for confusion, DI box was not to clear up the pod tone.

Nov 05, 2006 05:18 am Just to give my ideas on what ive found out through recording:
I dont use modellers, nothing against em just dont have one, and always mic up amps, and the main differnce ive found between a good punchy heavy guitar sound and an ok one generally comes from 1) the tracking and 2) the amp. I use to use my old 50watt marshall combo to record, and got an ok sound, and when i got hold of a nice big marshall half stack, i instantly thort it meant my recorded sound would be bigger - boy was i wrong. The sound was weak and broken up, as it was when i used my mates h&k half stack. I now record with a 15 watt marshall, and even using the built in crappy distortion, tracking it 4 times, and panning them apropriatly, i get a very big heavy metal sound. I recently done that exactly for one of my bands tracks using only an sm57 against the amp - for my next recording im going to experiment with a number of mics in various positions, as wel as quadrupal tracking. Spoilt for choice, lol

Nov 08, 2006 10:53 pm Check out my latest recording (death metal) via the mp3 link below.

4 guitar tracks 1 80% left, 1 80% right, 1 100% left , 1 100% right. All recorded with my V-Amp Pro. I live in an apartment and can not turn a real amp up enough to get a good recorded guitar sound. I Bought the V-Amp Pro a few months ago and I have not looked back since. I love it to death and only wish I bought it sooner.
