Fast Punk Beats

Okay. This has been bugging me for a while, so I figure I'll ask a drummer or someone who knows better. I do a lot of punk drum sequencing, but am not an actual drummer, so I've had to learn a lot by ear. My question is about the really fast beats that some drummers use. Think of No Use For a Name, NOFX, and Rise Against. I think they're played in double time, with the snare accents on the 'and' part of each note. This much I've figured out. But I can't quite hear when they play the hat -- if it's played with the snare or the kick.

You'll have to use a proportional font like Courier to see these all ligned up.

1:
H |-o---o---o---o---|
S |---o---o---o---o-|
K |-o---o---o---o---|

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +

2:
H |---o---o---o---o-|
S |---o---o---o---o-|
K |-o---o---o---o---|

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +

h = hat, s = snare, k = kick

So are they playing choice 1 or 2? The only other option is that they're playing the hat on every subdivision of the beat, but that sounds too fast. I've lost all perspective, because I've listened for it so many times that I can't hear what's 'right' anymore.

punks always on the one and three, if that makes sense, so it's like number one. it also helps crisp up the kick drum so when the snare cracks it sounds better.

hardcore and death metal use speed blast when it's hitting every 16th, but then they're mental ;)

I watch a couple good punk bands around town that are very old school in their stylings. They are actually hitting the hats with both the kick and snare. Now me, my hands don't move like that. It does sound too fast, but there are some fast folks out there. Now if I were trying to immitate said punk beat and can't move that fast, I would definitely hit the hats with the snare.

it's supposed to be with kick and snare... I was never able to do it because I'm a slow metal drummer...well I can do it in triplets because I learned to go into spasams...

/* EXCUSE FOR SLOPPY PLAYING */
Old band stuff... recorded in 2001 (I think) on extremely short notice due to a lineup change with pending shows... written and recored in 2 weeks... about 8 hours in studio... so this was us sloppy...
/* END EXCUSES */

this is a single handed 2 stroke roll similar to the HH on 1 and 3 so its closer to 1-e and 3-e (area of interest stars at about 2:20)

I couldn't play fast... normally we sounded like this:

Our light song that we all secretly called our favorite... worst acoustic tone in the world! :)

Basically yes it's supposed to be every downbeat... the trick (which I;ve never managed to do) is done by holding the stick up with the wrist, swinging with the elbow on one... and bring the elbow back up and swing with the wrist on 2... this is apparently supposed to be done with a washy highhat so the playing edge of the HH comes up to meet the stick on two so basically tempo is determined by low frequency HH harmonics... AKA really fast... I probably never managed to do that bcause I have very little wash in my HH because mine are freaking heavy (Zildjian Dyno Beats)... the HH stand can bairly lift them...

The side effect is that the even downbeats are softer and a different tone...

The hi hat is on the bassdrum, for bands like nofx. But everynow and then they put it on the snare, usually at slightly slower tempos.
The hi hat in drumming, gives the groove its kind of tempo feel. So a hat on the 1 and 3 makes it solid, on the 2 and 4 is jumpy and 1234 will make it sound really uptempo, so yes you can pull off any of those depending on what feel your trying to accomplish. And im not sure, but i dont htint he snare hits r on the "and" per say, those songs r just going a high BPM, i guess teh snare would be on the "and" if say the drummer is playing 200, and ur click is set to 100.

I knew there was a reason I put WinAmp back on my surfbox. It was because of you and your .ogg files. Funny enough though I have gotten into FLAC and some other's because of that.
