To do my duty to God and my country and to have good character
To help other people at all times
To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight...

...and respect copyrights?!

That's weird. But maybe a good thing. Still... weird... Why not get one for Trademark and Patents too?

To get a patch for...ummmmm, obeying the law? It's not patch worthy, it's expected!

In the case of Copyrights, it's not a well undertood legal area. Maybe Noize will have something to say. Wasn't he a leader?

Yeah, he just resigned his position like last week of something after many years of service.

Whther or not it's understood is a side issue...ignorance of the law is no excuse and all that...

Yep, after churning out a record 7 eagle scouts I just resigned as ScoutMaster and am now just a normal Asst. ScoutMaster once again. I now deal with the 2 older patrols of boys. Two of which are almost ready for eagle as well. That and I'm one of the main commity influances among other things. I also maintain our website (which needs some tending to and updating) and chair several of our yearly activities. And I am also the guiding light and head enginer and producer of our yearly troop movie which has grown from a lowly little powerpoint slide show to a half hour freaking music video. We could make it longer but I dont think the kids would sit through it all. And it takes us about 6 months of Wednsesday nights to put that movie together.

So ya, I'm a devoted scout person. Not sure why though sometimes. :-)

But ya, that is strictly an LA thing. People up here are talking a little smack about it really. Most agree that it isnt really something that should be done the way they are doing it. Those special patches are for things like SCUBA, Mountain Climbing, and other high adventure type activities. Things that the boys, mostly older have to really work at to achieve, or at the very least devote a good deal of time and effort into. This is more along the lines of watch a 15 minute video and your good to go.

I've allready made my decision if it gets near us I will vote against it myself. Not that Im against what it stands for, but it really isnt something I or many others find relative to scouting as a whole.

Oh, and dB, I don't know if it's changed, or if it's different in texas, but the oath I learned was:
On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

Well, also remember what you consider breaking the law doesn't matter.

So, then buying a car you know is stolen isn't illegal either, I suppose, eh?

Oct 25, 2006 08:03 am

yeah thats illegal. i wouldnt do something like that because i know the punishment for it.

so is speeding and i do it every day

so is lending a movie to a friend according to the industry.

so is making a copy of a movie i own to store in the van according to the industry.

so is copying an audio cd to my computer then to several other devices according to the industry.

so you never break a law?

technically back in the day when you could do it writing a check without the funds in at the time said check was written was breaking the law. how many good americans broke that one? i know my parents did.

and your right what i consider to be law doesnt matter.

show me the law that deems downloading(not sharing)illegal?

I never said I didn't break the law.

Possession of stolen goods would likely be the easy answer to a law that says it's illegal.

I will be the first to say the industry is getting insane in the extremes they are taking to protect their interests, but, at the same time, they are only doing it because people decided to interpret the laws for themselves and think that copying copyrighted materials is OK.

i think downloading is ok on a moderate level and not globally like it is. thats just something that happened and the music/movie industry didnt change with the times fast enough and now they are crying wolf. i have no sympathy for them. i do feel i respect artists and thats all that really matters. i own 1200 cds, 300 lps throw in another 300 cassettes(which are worthless now)and 500 movies. the ocaccionaly download i dont think is bad, in fact ive bought more music because of downloads and yes i know im in the minority but still there are some positives to downloading.

im just still amazed at some retailers cd prices the wife gave me a 50 dollar gift certificate to borders, i went on sunday only to be amazed they want from 16-20 dollars for a cd?!? wtf?

Well laws that are "relative" are not a waste, it's illegal or it's not. Stealing is stealing.

I simply don't buy music anymore, no CD's or anything. I only buy from local acts or indie bands that sell them for 5-10 dollars to promote themselves, and they are typically the better music too. I don't download, I don't buy...it's the only voice we really have, we have to speak with our wallets, and the downloading thing doesn't help...it just makes us "criminals"...so to speak.

Loki, you have it correct, that is the full version of the scout oath. Can you still do the scout law, in the correct order?

I actually got my Eagle after I turned 18... because I had all the requirements done beforehand... I also got pulled overimmeadiatly after I finished the requirements...and as a reward the officer didn't arrest me for felony speeding... (was going about 90mph)

I remember when the Family Life badge came out as an Eagle requirement, a lot of scoutmasters were pissed because it seemed like a PC add-on.

I was more in tune with the "High Adventure" scouting. Week long backpacking, whitewater rafting, I even attended The First Russian International Jamboree. I didn't do anything in The Order of the Arrow though I was inducted... I got the 50miler and the mile swim... it was all loads of fun...

....and sadly I couldn't remember the scout law until looking at it then it came back pretty quickly... however I still remember all of the military mottos I've had to do:

Basic Training:
dip, dip,slide, slide
who wanna rock, we wanna rock
we're the natual born killers
strike fast, strike deep
bring those commies to their knees
one shot, one kill... oh what a -****- thrill
stay alert , stay alive, Strike Force will survive.
Mad Dogs to the pit 'case we know that you ain't ****,
Hell Hounds to the pound before we run you in the ground
Crack Dealers don't you know, To Damn Hype is good to go.
BOOM Artillery! BOOM BOOM ARTILLERY!!!

Basic Training Battery Motto:
Motovated, Dedicated, ready to Strike
ready for combat day or night.
First to fight, Last to fall,
Alpha Battery kills them all. HOOAH!

Fort Sill motto: (where I took basic training)
Time on target! HOOAH!

AIT company motto:
Alpha Cobras!! (alot of us just screamed "Cobra!!!" in our best cobra commander voice though :) )

AIT (71D Legal Specialist) Class Motto:
We are 17-97. There is no one here who comes in second,
When we do our job we do it well.
team work is our guide to never fail.
DELTAS!! HOOAH!!!

PLDC: (I came up with this one :) )
One shot, two kills. HOOAH!!

391st MP BN, S1 (Adminstrative section) motto:
PEN CLICKERS!!!

Yep, Tuna has been in the Order of the Arrow for 4 years now. I dont think he has the desire to go for Eagle, but the youngest, Ray does.

I earned Eagle shortly after my 14th birthday, too early to really appreciate it. I didn't really appreciate the signifacance untill I was an adult really. Now I am an Elongomat in the Order of the Arrow. That is reserved for long standing members who have contributed to scouting over and above the call. And your required to maintain a certain number of camping days/nights as well as service hours. Tony is well over the 100 hour mark now, as am I.

My first Jamboree was in Norway. I loved it, as it was my first journey out of the country.
