God forbid these soft, micromanaged kids with the helicopter parents might get a skinned knee and have to go to the emergency room with lights and sirens blazing! Pitiful.

You haven't really lived as a child until you've kissed the steel dashboard of your dad's '55 Oldsmobile a few times. Safety seats? Bike helmets? Meh.

Grow up right.

it's almost as bad as the schools that don't have failing anymore, or the teams that don't keep score. Kids need to fail, plain and simple, it teaches them how to handle it when they fail in the real, adult world, and lets them know that if they don't do their part there are real consequences.

The world we live in is full of idiotic rules. Children can no longer be just that, Children!!!

Protecting our children is one thing, but robing them of anything to do with childhood is insane. What have WE allowed to happen to this once sane place??

Right now the world for me sucks!! And reading this kind of crap just makes me even more angry then I am allready. The things that allowed to happen and could be controlled all spiral out of control. And the things that make no sense at all and are just plain part of growing up are being taken away.

Maybe if the schools actually paid attention and did what they are there for, educating our children and teaching them we wouldn't have the insane world we live in now.

My wife is Director of Education at a local college where I also work. We talk about this new trend all the time, it seems.

In the student manual at our college, one of the chapters says something like, "incompletion of course objectives may result in an interruption of your training." Translation: flunk too many courses, and you'll be expelled. Using a red pen for correcting papers? Too confrontational, and too aggressive for students' fragile egos.

I could go on and on, but HRC's server has limited storage.

an interuption in your training? Crikey... someone farting/laughing/sneezing is an interuption... they should just say "Act like an idiot and we'll kick ya out"

geez, I heard that on the radio a couple days ago... it's really sad.

though I'm no parent I'm not stupid enough to think kids can be micromanaged. If you clamp down on one thing, you'll just lose control on something else...and generally kids err on being disruptive... failing that, destructive.

Wow this is ridiculous.

Although I want to avoid a blanket statement, it just seems like kids are way to sheltered these days, grow up way too fast, and then stop progessing when it is time to do so.

Far too many kids living at home nowadays when they should be out in the world. I know several 20+ year olds who still live with mom, and one actually just got a new car at mom's expense. If you love it, set it free.

Of course there is really nothing wrong with that, but I remember being ready to go @ 17, renting a place, fending for myself and loving every minute of it.

damn, so no more smeer the queer? I thought it was getting bad when they wouldn't let my cousin play touch football on the grass field (elementary school). Shoot we used to play tackle on cement (once in a while). We also used to play jungle ball, or ghetto ball which was basically everybody for themselves tackle basketball. That was fun!

Honestly though, let kids be kids. Falling down is part of being a kid. Getting hurt is part of being a kid. As a parent, please don't blame the school if your kid does something stupid and falls head first from the monkey bars. Live and learn doggit!

Hellz ya, I remember smear the queer! I also remember a game we made up called "Hide and go Mangle", we'd run around in old man Kermit's corn field (man did he hate that) we'd hide and the biggest kid in the 'hood would look for us and if he found and caught us he'd toss us around like a rag doll...

I agree, ya gotta take some falls, get some scars, loose some games and crap to build character and fully develop as a functional person.

See, we are all building character right now. The kids growing up in school today wont even have a clue how to handle a conversation like this. They'll either run home and cry or shoot someone!

I have to admit, I was the first Scout Master to promote letting the kids play Smear the Queer! A couple of the troop adults found it a bit much, didn't care for the name. I had to gracefully explain it is only and expresion. Needless to say, it was the hit game for those guys all summer while camping and such. When they had to plan their acitivty all would write down, Smear the Queer. From the youngest to the oldest. And they all enjoyed it immensley. The best part was watching Tuna slow down to let the youngest kids catch up, and then he'd bolt and stay just out of their reach for a little longer before letting them all jump aboard and pile him into the ground. And yes, he has several scares from the affiars this summer as well, and he's damn proud of them.

Why would the schools take that kind of thing away from a kid??? I just dont get it. Let a kid be a kid for crying out loud.

Someone explain smear the queer?

Oh other news though: This last saturday I was at the park, doing my foam sword fighting thing. First, you have to udnerstand that while this stuff is "padded" it can still hurt like hell (if you're hitting properly, and not like a pussy, IS: Swinging from the hips, not the arm, and aiming for the kidneys). There were a few new kids out who had asked me to show them the basics, so I did, and this one kid wanted to learn how a little guy like myself was able to generate so much power in his shots, so I showed him simple body mechanics. I left a nice set of bruises on his arms showing him the difference between hitting with only the arm and putting the hips into it. He didn't complain at all. Well monday I got a call from an angry mom. Turns out this kid was 15 or so, and his mom was pissed that I "abused" her kid. I pretty much explained to her that before he was allowed to play he had to have her sign a waiver, explaining that it was a contact sport, and that the organization and individual members are not responsible for injury assuming all the safety rules are followed (minimum of padding, weapons checked for safety by safety officer, etc). I asked her if she was brought a waiver to sign from him. She said "yeah, but I don't read that crap". I told her that was her problem, she signed off on it.

That's a big problem these days, parents don't know what they're kids are doing, and then when they get a little roughed up they whine and moan.

I really hope I see this kid at the park this weekend, though I doubt he'll show up. I told him to bring his mom and get her to fight.

Loki, that sucks, cuz the kid prolly had fun doing it. I think we forget that kids are generally tougher than we think they are.

Smeer the queer, as we played, was one kid has a ball, usually a football, and all the other kids have to chase, catch and tackle the kid with the ball. This usually leads to a huge dog pile which is always fun. Then, once the kid is tackled he has to throw the ball away and everybody else tries to get the ball and the lucky one to get the ball becomes the "queer", and everyone then chases and tackles that kid. This cycle basically goes on until someone gets hurt or everybody gets tired.

Yep, thats pretty much what I remember of the game...only we in the midwest call it a "hog pile" not a "dog pile". :-)

Loki, I'll try and upload the video of the boys playing it at one campout this summer. Not the best footage, but you'll get the idea. And besides, You'll get to see Tuna get absolutly clothes lined by this kid who was apperantly fast enough to cut cross field and catch him off gaurd. I think there is a shot of my youngest Ray as well going head on with a 200 pound 16 year old. Great fun. I wish I could still run like that.

Blasphemer!!!!!!!!!! :)

generally find and fllow the install directions usually on the website or in a file called INSTALL

to install source packagename.tar.gz
[TAB] is also autocomplete ...nice for long names :)
tar -xjvf packagename.tar.gz
if packagename.tar.bz2 then bunzip2 packagename.tar.bz2 then tar -xvf etc...

cd packagename
./configure
make
su -c 'make install'
(enter root password)

on debian:
apt-get update
apt-get install packagename

or if installing file packagename.deb
su (enter root password)
dpkg -i packagename.deb

or use synaptic to do it graphically

never used redhat :)

well what usually has been happening is it's messing up around the ./configure part, or I need too many dependancies. So I switched back to windows so I could actually record music haha.

ah dependency hell... yeah probably the only huge problem with linux is that you need to read direction and often those directions arn't very good. :)

There are some audio distribrutions that should be "load 'n' play" Dyne:Bolic is a live CD... I used DeMuDi until moving back to my normal Slackware...
