Just random stuff or do you have a specific area in mind? Its kinda bluesy really, little riffs throughout mixed gently under the main line?

Hey Tony! This is really good! I always love your sound, it's such a cool mix of things. Your voice has a Southern flavor to it... you from the south?

I've been called "Appalachian" (spelling) before.... the family comes from west virgina- im from ohio though......

no, nothing really in mind- just throw in what you "feel", then mp3 the lead (full length of the song so its easy for me to fit in timing wise), and i will mix, rinse and repeat.

have at it. like i said, i tried. im just not a very good player, and i was tired of mucking it up.
another tid bit is, i recorded this in a hotel couple months back. i transfered the files to my home machine and tweakd, then threw out a bass line but the rest was done with my acoustic, sm 57 and my little drum machine into my laptop.... now Thats minimal

i LOVE the bass line. how it goes down like that. thats a great bassline. i have a few beers in me and am working on some stuff that is making it sound off balance. chromatic stuff that still fits.

Yep this song is really cool Tony! I have something I think sounds pretty cool but by the time I had it worked out my fingers were too sore for a good take, so going to be tommorow before it's done. Do you want us to post test mixes or just send you the tracks for you too mix?

Ive already made some tweaks to the tune that i havent posted.(just changes to the sound, no music changes) ill mix the final and send a shiney tonyd cd out the "lead man" (or woman or child) as a bonus ill send out a cd to just about anyone.....

Here's a test mix, I want to see if what I'm doing is too heavy before I continue in this direction. :) This one's rough, lots of mistakes etc.

Wow, too heavy.... ya know that niel young crazy horse guitar sound, thats what i picture. that could be part of my problem though, its what i always picture... something more david gilmore perhaps? not asking for much am i... the guitar tone wasnt "organic" though, that much i feel for sure- something less processed...
im off to bed, thanks for the work so far... listen again early tomarrow morning.

Tony -

Are you concerned about the quality factor regarding saving and resaving MP3 generations before mastering to CD?

Member
Since: Jan 18, 2003

Oct 14, 2006 11:39 pm

if you thought that was heavy, you really wouldnt like my idea (maybe youd like the bridge part though). i need to change it anyway, the two parts i had didnt mesh when played together. i;ll try some other things tonight.

let me ask y ou though: what specifically did you do to get that perfect bass tone? its deep, clear, thumpy...what'd you do? i would use that tone in my stuff. i like it.

I thought it might be a bit heavier than you were thinking of. I'll use a tamer guitar patch. :)

ok, herb- the quality question... not sure. as long as the quality matches up with whats there... its ok with me. remember this was recorded in a hotel room with a mic'd acoustic guitar.....
except for the bass- (fourty) i used my yamaha psr-gx76 keyboard- acoustic bass sound, then heavily compressed to get that.
and after sleeping- i was thinking (dont laugh) a kind of bonjovi meets aerosmith type lead thing... (is that possible?) i tried again last night but alas nothing.... such a darn simple song youd think it would be easy....

to help you guys, heres the chords ahhhh... d,c,g. if you dont know them email me. ahahahahhaha
oh i kill me.....

oh thats cool- that changes everything. i never thought of it as a piano tune..... this is way cool.
im at work (laptop speakers) but i think this plus a short guitar lead in the "lead spot" will finish it.

what a great take on the tune..... im bowled over.....

please put up that piano-mp3 and i will mix tonight.

great...

And listening today, there's some cleanup still to do *blush* Would you like me to change the lead section piano part to the basic piano part I play during the verse to leave more room for the lead part? I can do that too if you like.

old dog, you still up for for some guitar- just the "lead part" of the song, mainly, but play all the way through, never know what cool stuff comes out. i tried again, and i cant even get that part right. im using a fairly clean, almost country lead sound and that fits well, i just cant play the guitar....

Yeah, I was working on a tone last night for it, tonight I'll try and get the part down. :) I came up with a fairly clean tone, still some overdrive but much tamer than the mix I posted.

Not to dismiss the lead gutiar thing, but dang! That pinao really sets up a kool mood for that tune. And I do mean very kool. If you can incorperate that and a little under toned guitar lead this will be a killer tune to say the least. I'd have to say with the piano in it this really adds a new dimension to your sound Tony.

Way to jump on this DungBeatle, it really gives a whole new dimmension to the tune. It really adds to the vocal parts in my opinion.

I just finished cleaning up the piano, sorry it took longer than I thought. The lead solo part area is now back to rhythm. I'm uploading now, but it will take a while, slow ISP. Willpost link later...

This is just the piano part, fairly raw, you'll have to fade it out. It is a very tinny piano sample. It is the "Rok Piano" on the Kurzweil 2500. Very metallic in sound. It really cuts through, and it's not something you listen to all on its own... It's been compressed lightly, I did run a room simulator for a large room... I doubled the bass guitar part on the piano, so you might want to EQ out the bass a little if you think it's muddying up the low end.

Here's a mix mainly so you can check out the guitar tone. If this tone is okay I'll work out the parts better and then you can use which ever parts suit what your after.

gentle man... i think you have given this song a stature previously unattainable.
I cannot overstate what you two have brought to my humble table.
I wasnt sure how a beatle that eats poop and a dog that cant learn new tricks would add to things.... my oh my.... add you have gentleman.
dan- thats a great tone- smoothie-r and creamier. go with that one. dan, leave the eq alone on the finished lead track- ill have to tweak a bit to get both parts through- compress and reverb is up to you. get the sound the way you want it, and ill fit it in.
Dung ill mix the piano tonight after work.
Thanks again guys- and send me an email
[email protected] so i can get your addr's to send out cd's. i might just print the covers in color!

Sounds like olddog might need to keep the notes up higher so it doesn't conflict with the piano. Need to push the piano part back and maybe add that EQ to filter out some of the bass so it doesn't get muddled. Looking forward to hearing the next! Let me know if you want something changed in the piano part...

DungBeatle: I mixed the guitar very low in the mix, it actually cuts thru pretty good without stepping on the piano mixed a bit higher, a bit of EQ tweaks & panning all should be good. It was pretty late last night when I settled on the tone and ran a couple takes, so I was basically just stumbling thru the guitar part and didn't want it to really stand out. <G>

I'll get a good take done probably tonight and give you a link Tony.

Even when I do work with someone I never meet them. When I do a colab it is online and just via transfers.

I haven't played in a band in probably over 20 years now so solo is my main thing. So dont feel bad about it at all. I think it forced me to learn things I might never have tried.

OH ya, liked it before and like it even better now. The piano and lead parts lying under and then kind of creeping out really adds to it. I have to say this is one of the more interesting things you have done Tony. I think your vocal style fits it very well, it adds to the kind of moody, mysterious feel of the tune. The verby sound on the leads really keep it kind of moody, and the piano gives it a little bit more serious tone.

I'm going to have to try this one in the car and crank it up.

Hey Tony sounds great! Nice powerful mix, all parts are clear great job. The piano part really fills it out nicely and fits the tune to perfection. The solo break sounds like I might of sent you the wrong take, the sound should be closer to the guitar part that runs thru the whole song with just a bit more delay, but it still sounds fine.

Dung, piano sounds great to me I wouldn't change it, I'm listening on headphones and it sounds pretty clean to me. :)

I enjoyed working on the tune, thanks for the opportunity!
