Dabbling in Countryish: Cold Side of the Bed

I've been messing around with country styles. This is a collab with someone who wrote the lyrics, I cobbled up the music, banged on the piano and grumbled out the lyrics :) If you'd take a moment and tell me how bad it is... it's just a rough recording, but any pointers in that area would be helpful too. Especially if anyone has a clue how I can make my vocal tone sound better. I know, hire someone :) I'm having trouble relaxing...

Cold Side of the Bed
Copyright © Richard Larabie

Verse 1:
Your picture's on the mantel
Next to our ol' wedding bands
On one side burns a candle
Lit with a trembling hand
I lay awake most every night
Wishing you were by my side
The moment you slipped away
Still frozen in my mind

Chorus:
The scent of your perfume still lingers in our room
And on the satin pillows where you laid your head
Your clothes are in the closet just like the day you left
And I'm here all alone on the cold side of the bed

Verse 2:
Last night a smoke filled evenin'
In a corner booth 'cross town
My lonely heart was bleedin'
I was puttin' back the rounds
Then I saw your silhouette
In the shadows on the wall
I called out your name
Then you vanished down the hall

(To Chorus)

Bridge:
My heart's been bruised and broken
It's way beyond repair
Though words remain unspoken
The messages are clear 'cause...

(To Chorus)

Tag:
And I'm here all alone,
On the cold side of the bed...

Thanks!

Holy cow!! UM thats good indeed!

Reminds me of old country stuff. Nice playing by the way. I honestly didn't hear one thing I would change at all. The piano sound is just fine, and the playing again is well done. You vocal is great. I guess after hearing all your other tunes I never imagined you to sing like that.

Honestly that take sounds great, there is emotion in your voice. And I dont really think any other treatment is needed at all. The reverb is just perfect, not over done and the piano and your voice sit very well together in this mix. There is plenty of power in your voice to be honest and I dont think I would change a thing.

I will give it another listen tommorrow and doulbe check, but cobbled together seems to work out very well just as it is.

Noize

PS, and ya gotta remember. I am not a big country fan at all. Old country yes, new country does not trip my trigger at all.

Thanks for the gracious feedback Noize! I've never been much of a country fan myself, so this is a real excursion for me. Glad my grumbly voice worked out Ok. I just don't have much faith in it, especially since my daughter's voice is so much better! This song required a male vocal and I was all there was. Thanks again!

I surely would not be bashfull with that voice. I know most people dont like their own voice, I am one of those as well. Others say it is fine, I think I stink. So trust me on this one, it sound just fine and fits the bill to a T.

Ditto what Noize says! It's great! And I AM a big fan of country music. I can hear this with a moaning steel guitar in the background and a twangin' tele filling in with some licks, and big girl harmonies on the chorus.

And I wish I had your grumbly voice.

Thanx for backing me up on that one Jim. I'm trying to think of a country guy from teh late 60's early seventies who his voice kind of reminds me of. IT'' come to me eventually.

I gotta agree with Jim after listening again, and again, and again. A pedal steel whining behind the piano would really set the sadness tone indeed. But the harmonies would indeed add to it as well.

Still like it as is though, without a doubt.

The fat one always watches us.

Hey thanks for the great feedback! Yeah, I'd love to hear this with a real band (and a really great baritone, I do ok). Been a confidence-builder for my vocals. I don't usually attempt country music, so the acceptance is encouraging all on its own.
