Lyric/Music Question

hey everyone! I have yet another question for yous. Me and my drummer (who also plays piano and trumpet) are constantly writting new songs, they are good but neither him or I can write good lyrics. We recently found a new singer/bassist, and he can write lyrics. What are your thoughts on a song that has music written by one person, and lyrics by another? is this a bad idea?
I'd also like to thank everyone here for helping me out over and over again
Thank you everyone- Dan

My band does it a lot... I write a lot of the music, but the guitarist and bassist have written all of the lyrics.

There have been some great songs that were written by two people, one writing music and the other lyrics. Some of us are really adept at the music aspect and can't write lyrics and vice versa. What ever works best.I have a much easier time with the music than I do with lyrics and have gratefully accepted the help of others who have lyrics they need put to music.Working together in a band helps a lot because hopefully you share similar tastes.

Elton John is a good example of how well the separate roles can be done well...like him or not, ya gotta admit, he is one hell of a musician...and Bernie a lyricist...

That's also the standard songwriting arrangement for the band Rush: Alex & Geddy collaborate and write the music, and Neil writes all the lyrics.

ya too bad they suck tho...hehehe

I don't hate many bands, but I HATE Rush...I hate bands that need to have every single song say "look how tlaented and musically genious I am"...argh, makes me gag, I just wanna rock out...lyrically I think they are pretty good, but musically it gets boring to me...and I do realize I am in the minority here...

Don't feel bad dB, I've never liked Rush. Though I do respect their musical talent and ability, personally.....I think they suck. lol. Just an oppinion.
As far as the Music/Lyrics go. I think in some cases that 2 different artists can have a more widespread effect on a song, for instance: Heavier music, Softer vocals and Lyrics=Linkin Park. lol.
Or in some cases the writer is able to capture larger audiences by making their song apply to more than one situation. ie: multiple meanings. Therefore drawing in new listeners that might not have liked that style of music before.
