Static in Protools?

Certain songs, when I play them back I'll hear static accompanying peaks or certain instruments, sometimes only in one speaker. Does anyone know any possible causes for this? Sometimes I figure I'm just peaking, but then I don't even see the red on whatever instrument it sounds like is causing the static. Is it a buffer thing? More ram? Is it the hardware itself? Cause it's definitely not the stereo speakers, I get it through the earphones AND on the bounced track (in any stereo system) as well. I did get the hardware on ebay, but what could the previous owner have done to it for it to give static to tracks?
