I lack sophisticated computer knowledge. Maybe someone can shed some light upong the computer chip world for me.

If I have a laptop with an internal hard drive thats 5,400RPM's and I want to Tack on an External
Hard drive (The drive I'd like to run my studio stuff off of) and its got 7200RPM's, will I encounter any problems? I'm just trying to bypass buying a new computer, I like my mini Laptop.

Danke for any insight.

No problem.

The computer can push data faster than either speed, so it's just a matter of waiting on the drive.

Plus, you'd probably have the drive on the USB or Firewire port, so that would be one more degree of separation from the internal HD controller.

No worries!

or, sell an old guitar, and buy a 10,000 rpm drive: Whoo-Hoo!

Just Kidding, 7200 should be fine, for most home type stuff.

One thing I'd look into doing though, is to only use the new external drive for tracking. Put your program files on the 5200 drive. Also, make sure the windows swap file doesn't get migrated over to the new drive.

This way, when you're trying to write several tracks at once (and possibly read a few too), there's no other activity from windows, program files, solar eclipse, etc. Should make for more artifact-free tracking.

Yep, the 7200 is fine with the laptop for an external drive. It wont cause any problems. The faster the better.
