How real do these drums sound?

Hey guys,

I was adding more samples to my drum machine so that there wasn't that sense of repetition on my drum tracks. I just wanted to see how believable you all thought they sounded.

And to those who already heard this song, I re did the rhythm guitars too with my new tone.

Thanks in advance :)

It's tough to analyze the sound of an individual instrument in a mix, in this type of music. Drum sounds, in particular, are a problem because the important harmonics that give the drums their tone are masked by the compressed and distorted guitars. From what I could hear of them, they sound OK for the genre.

Good luck,

H.

I must agree on the level of the drums. They definately need to be brought forward in the mix. THe toms seem to hit at an OK volume as they pass by, but the kick, cymbals and snare need some lift. Compresion will work well for that. EQ wise they sound like they are prety much spot on. The heavy hits on the tom's and snare really sound great. I like the sound of these drums for sure.

I have to say the guitar mix is a bit mid heavy, but if it is set back in the mix with a slightly lower level it shoudl be good as is without any EQ work at all. When you hear the guitar alone part around 3:25 or so it sounds great. But once its mixed in with the other instruments it kind of meshes slightly at that volume.

The vocals as well seem to take over the mix at certain times. Not the entire mix, just moments here and there.

Otherwise, man I love this tune. Very well arranged and well writen.

Okay great, thanks for the help! I'll see what I can do regarding the guitar and drum levels.

In terms of realism, would you say that these drums are decent then? Can you tell that they are done on a machine? I'm looking to use these on my demo CD, but would like to make sure I'm not the only one who thinks they sound "real."

Nope, they sound plenty real in the mix. Like I said before, I think you have gotten pretty good with the programing so it is sounding much more natural now.
