Problem with Alesis Multimix Firewire, please help!

Hi, I'd really appreciate some help from someone more technically-minded! First off, my system is a PC running XP, which also has a Creative Audigy 2 installed on it.

Well, my Multimix 8 Firewire arrived today - followed the installation instructions to the letter, and it is showing up as working properly in Device Manager and in the hardware tab of Sounds and Audio Devices. However, it does not appear in any of the drop down lists - only my sound card and system sound devices appear there. If I open up Audition 2.0 and go to Audio Hardware Setup, 'ASIO Multimix' appears in the Audio Driver dropdown menu - but if I select it, the program hangs and can't even be closed via a ctrl-alt-delete, only a full system reboot. What am I doing wrong? All the trouble shooting guides give help if you can't see the mixer in Device Manager etc, but nothing says anything about this.

Been trying everything I can think of to no avail. Any ideas?? Some sort of audio hardware conflict perhaps...? *clutches at straws* :(

ouch, that hurts.

First, I'd go to their website, and download /install current drivers. You always can reload the CD versions, if the new ones are worse. More than likely, they'll be better.

Then, can you play any sounds into it, or out of it using the windows applets. Maybe sound recorder, or if you can play system sounds. This way you remove AA2.0 from the equation, to try and pinpoint the problem causer.

If you can't, then I'd think either the drivers, or the device itself (or cable) may be bad.

Try a different cable, and /or try a different firewire port, if you can.

Also, the firewire port may be a problem. I've heard that some chipsets are a problem with some FW devices. I don't have any specifics, but it's worth some research.

If you can play back windows sounds through the mixer, or, you CAN record some sounds via sound recorder, then I'd say the mixer, cable, and port are in good shape. Then I'd look at the software.

Again, this is where the driver becomes an issue, then AA after that. Maybe you can try the WDM interface drivers, if possible. ALso you may try MME, just to see if it can work with those. ASIO may be pooping the driver out, and locking the PC.

You may want to try and see if there's a Alesis support forum. Maybe this problem has occurred before, and there's a known fix for it.

Sorry bout the glitch, it certainly sux to get new gear, to have it not work right off.

Keep the boxes, case you need to return it. Maybe the FW port won't play nice with the mixer, and you may have to go USB (just thinking out loud).

Good luck.

Great. Gotta love a free fix.

Good luck with the unit, and write back if you can, with your opinions, how it works, etc.

There's been some interest in those type units, and it could help out someone looking for something like that.

Hi!

I actually had the same problem when i was starting up my multimix firewire 8 the first time. Problem was solved by first powering up the computer, and once the computers started up, you power up the multimix. (Just in case u get the same problem again)

It actually says in the quick start guide of the mixer that if your computer hangs when you've first powered on the multimix, and then the computer, you should try it the other way around.
