What is your current sound card?

yep

can't give an opinion without knowing what you're working with. fill out your profile (over there on the right ------->) and we can answer more efficiently.

my guess is you've got onboard soundcard, or soundblaster (or sound-disaster, as dB calls 'em)

Those aren't meant to be real recording cards, and can give new users fits. Good recording cards can be had for around 100$, if you need to get one.

Let us know what you're working with first, and it'll be easier.

Take a look at my profile (bottom of this post) for an example of what to put in there.

Check out a Line6 Toneport, a really good setup for a beginner with an amazing array of guitar, bass and vocal sounds available.

Joe,

The reason you're getting the delay is most likely due to something called "latency". If I recall correctly, using a regular 'consumer' soundcard (i.e. those that come with the computer), you'll be using windows' default audio driver (DirectSound, I believe?) which is meant (for the most part) for playback-only, partially due to the aforementioned "latency" you've discovered. Any "recording" sound card (and many consumer after-market soundcards, including some soundblasters) will have the option of using "ASIO" drivers, which are much, much lower latency than the default windows drivers. You'll be able to play a note and hear exactly what you're playing when you're playing it, along with whatever you've previously recorded.

Assuming you actually read these responses, many people here can give you great recommendations of what sound cards you'll want to check out; don't worry, you don't have to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars for what you want! :)

Hope this helps.
