OK so heres the thing. A friends band wants to record with me but can't afford to pay me in cash so offered to maybe help me out with buying some equipment. He asked what i needed for my studio and 2 things came to mind:

1:Harbal!

2: and a set Of small diaphram Condenser Mic's.

As i have heard a pair of SDC's are recomended for getting a good sounds as drum overheads. As of now I've been using a pair of Rode NT1000's (they are LDC's) as overheads and have been pleased with them, but ive been wondering if a pair of SDC's would help a great deal?

If you think it would be a good idea to get some SDC's what woudl you recommented. HIGHEST i can go is $400 US. The Rode NT5's caught my eye, but i really have no experince with SDC's so im not sure what the best chioces are. all i can say is that so far ive really enjoyed the sounds ive gotten from RODE microphones, but im definately down to try others if recommended.

any help would be cool.

thanks

I have been using SM81's as overheads. I've seen them go for about $200 each on ebay. about $750 for a matched pair new.

I hear the MC012's do well, and you should find them for about 200 for a pair... could be a bit off on price of these.

I got a pair of NT5, but unfortunately, i've not been able to use them much, as I'm still building my studio (getting close, I am).

I've read a lot of good press on them, for the $$$, and wasn't hesitant to purchase, without hearing them. My sales guy was pretty positive about them, over the SP, and samson offerings (course, he would, wouldn't he)

I know it's not much help, but at least there's some input.

I picked them up to be used as overheads, but also for mic'ing instruments, acoustic guitar, and maybe piano, if I get the chance. I'm thinking that they'll work well when paired up with an LDC.

I've tried NT1A's as overheads and didn't really like it. Sounded very 'clangy'.

Moving to small diaphragm mics cleaned up my OH recording a bit.

I like the NT 5's, but I felt the sm81's are a little dull? But I used them as orchestral overheads, not drums.

Well SDC's will probably help with your drums as you are thinking but they will also be great to help out with alot of other tasks in your studio. For instance, recording accoustic guitar and other acoustic instruments. I heard a very good recording on this forum of acoustic guitar. It was so good, I asked how she recorded it and she told me the configuration and she used two Rode NT5's. The results were great.

I have no experience with SDC's myself but I have heard good things about the NT5's and they have many applications.
