Sonar setup issue

I have a creative audigy 4, 1gb ram,2ghz comp with sonar 4 installed.
i have amplitube and guitar rig also installed.

when i run guitar rig/amplitube live and then run sonar to record, it tracks everything coming out of my speaker(ex.winamp output etc.)and the guitar recorded is shaky.

i want to set it up so that it records only the output of guitar rig/amplitube. is that possible?

sure is

I believe there's a setting somewhere to do with creative labs, that says 'record everything i'm hearing'. Turn that off, and you shouldn't be recording what's playing out from winamp.

I don't have a CL SB card, but I've heard this question before, and that's usually the solution.

I wouldn't play out of winamp at the same time though, I'd figure out a way to play the backing tracks from inside of sonar. dBPowerAmp should convert the MP3 (if that's what you're using) over to a wave file, then you can play it from inside of sonar, plus record your new incoming signal.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'shaky'. If it's got snaps, crackles, and pops, then maybe you need to adjust the buffer settings in sonar. I'm thinking having winamp playing a file, while trying to record a new track is going to introduce some problems, as they're both running things from the hard drive, plus using the sound system, on their own, and possibly not nicely.

Also, there's the signal path to consider, if you're plugged into the 'mic in' then there's going to be 'iffy' quality. What other equipment are you using? are you plugged into a mixer / preamp, or directly into the computer input. Are you using 'line in' or 'mic in'.

Creative Labs cards are good for gaming, and playback, but they're not usually regarded as good audio recording cards. M-Audio, EMU, ESI, and others are good start-up audio processing cards, which can be had for little $$$, if you're inclined to upgrade your audio interface.

Yep, if you upen the windows sound control panel and click the reocrd option you will find the what you hear button checked. Uncheck that and you should be fine.

thanks. i am using the line in. the winamp recording is just a side effect i was curious about, i don't really use it for drums or anything. i am new to sonar so i wanted to know where i would go about increasing the buffer.

in sonar goto options > audio and it should be in there somewhere....

also check you control panel in the start menu, and go to volume control > options > recording and make sure the "what you hear" tab is UNchecked.
