I've got three new songs (well, one of them is a revised old one) here:

www.myspace.com/michaeljermyn

I would like advice on any/all of them. Any comments would be extremely appreciated!

You can find the mp3s here:

hey Mike (can I call you mike?). I'll have a listen in the morning when I'm near speakers again.

I'll get at them tommorrow as well. Been extremely busy the last couple weeks, which hasn't left a ton of time for listening. I have a list a mile long as I usually try to listen to everyone here.

Interesting vocal treatment on Dear Firefly. I liked it for the most part. There were a couple tiny spots were it blurred the vocal itself just the smallest bit, but I would put blame probably on the myspace player for that. The guitar was stout sounding without being over powering.

I liked Avalanche as well. The vocals sounded a bit shakey here and there and the multi voice parts were a little blurred when all the voices come together. You might try to EQ them with a good deal of differance to seperate them. Some slight correction of the pitch on the voices would be good too. The instrumentation was pretty good as far as I can tell on the myaspace player.

Grass Between... was nice and simple. The insruments again were sparse and nicely done. I liked the simple vocals style with this one. The feel is almost whispering, very soothing.

Thanks for the comments! What exactly do you mean by the vocals being blurred in some parts? Do you mean muddy? By the way, the vocals on Dear Firefly had no effects on them except noise reduction. No EQ, no reverb, nothing. It kind of just happened like that.

oh, and flame, you can of course call me mike (that's my name!)

Well no they dont exactly get muddy in that sense. It is more of the tonal quality of the multiple vocal tracks is very similar in the EQ range that they tend to get blurred or smeared sounding. They kind of null each other out and become one sound. In otherwords there is no definate seperationg between the differant voice tracks.

Did you by chance just duplicate the saem vocal track over a few times for the differant parts? If so that is maybe what caused it. Otherwise I generally treat each seperate vocal take with atiny bit differant EQ and even a slight variation of the reverb as well. That and the use of pnaaing will really help them get seperated from one and other.

i really dig your song "grass between your.." i love the minimalist instrumentals and the soft, slow vocals fit real well, though i agree with noize that theres something wierd going on with the vocal recording that makes it awkward to listen to. i almost want to say the mix should be beefed up a little, maybe on the third verse or so, to make it more lush. another instrument or some bass or more of the xylophone might be good, but then again that might take away from the minimalist atmosphere you've created. so it's up to you.

avalanche is also good. reminds me of the arcade fire with the sprawling melodies and multiple instruments and voices. very well put together composition.

i also really like "dear firefly." it reminds me a lot of simon and garfunkle. the harmonies are great and the guitar is wistful and fitting. again the vocal recordings are a little strange. i don't know enough to put my finger on it.

your songs have that great quality of emotion that's so hard to achieve, where just a simple, well written melody and the right choice of words can evoke such a strong feeling. i really enjoyed them, and i've got em in my collection to listen to later.

look forward to more.
