my improvised home rec studio:hp pavillion with a emu 1212 pci card, yamaha mg10 mixer, one nice and shiny sm58.For recording I use Cubase Sx.My mixer's setup :
9/10input mg10 to l/r out sound card
no.1 input mg10 -the sm58
insert on ch1 L to L in sound card.
Te problem is...the signal when I record(the signal
that arrives to the cubase's audio ch) is a bit
weak....No matter how much I try to bring it to
let's say distortion....I can't.
If I turn gain on ch 1 and the level pot all the way...I almost get the desired thickness of the wave if you can call it that but if i turn the c-r level up so i can properly hear the instrumental i also turn the volume up for the mic and what i hear is my voice distorted....
Uff...looking back on what I wrote gives me a headake...so I'll apologise now for the difficulty
of understanding what my problem is....I know it must be a realy small detail that I'm missing here somewhere....but I really can't see it.
If you do...please help this poor soul

How does the signal look on the mixer? Is it a healthy signal on the meters before it hits the computer? If not, are you using an XLR or jack cable? If it's a jack, get an XLR.

Otherwise, maybe stop using the insert to feed the signal into the computer and use the group outs, don't use the same group as the pc outputs are connected to or you'll hear a lot of feedback. Have you adjusted the trim on the channel as well?

If that's no use or you don't have group outputs get back and i'll try to rethink, or someone else will be able to help.

tnx rigsby....
The signal is as healthy as it can be...in the red even.:)
I have no group outs. For the price of the mg10...you can't expect too many options.
I use an xlr for the mic...the signal leaves the mixer via ts(the insert half-way trick)....it gets into the pci card via ts...

On your E-Mu control panel you may want to check and see that you rinput level controls are turned up sufficiantly. It also may be it is set to recieve at -10dBu which is consumer level. It should be set to get input at +4dB. As well you software may have some control on imput signal as well. I dont remembber exactly how Cubase SX is set up but in Sonar I have always been able to set the desired input level.

Cubase you have to go to device set up, and click the control pannel and it will bring up the control pannel for your hardware.
