Jamming with Garage Band

I am an old fart newcomer.I have been making arrangements for background music with Band In A Box and importing into GarageBand.I want to jam against these tracks with my tenor saxophone using a mike but if I let the other tracks play Garage Band picks up this along with the real instrument track I'm playing on.Should I use earphones?Is there any info I should know to make a good clean blend?

Yes you should use Headphones when recording with a mic.

Can you describe your set up as well. You might be feedng the playback signal of the jam tracks right inot the recorded track directly or through the mixer, besides what the mic might be picking up from the speakers.
