XLR to 1/4"?

My old mixer only has 1/4" inputs for mics. What's the best way to go from XLR to 1/4" without losing quality? Are there different types of such adaptors? I have one thing lying around that I think is a high-to-low impedance thing, or vice-versa, maybe--is that what I want? I seem to remember a buzz when I used it once. Is there a particular type of XLR-to-1/4" adaptor I need to track down that would be best?
