speaker spec translation?

Hi, folks--

I know very little about what speaker specs mean. Can someone translate for me what the following specs mean? How would these speakers be likely to rate in quality, in your opinion? Thanks much!

Nic

Type: 2 Way Acoustic Suspension
Woofer: 8" laminated long throw woofer with rubber surround
Tweeter: 1" throat compression horn 60(h)/40(V)
Frequency Response (-10dB): 55 Hz-20KHz
Impedance: 8 Ohms
Power capacity: Noise: 70 watts; PGM 140 watts; Max 280 watts
Sensitivity (dB/2.8V, 1m): 88dB
Crossover frequency: 5KHz (12dB/Octave)

Basically:

Type: 2 Way Acoustic Suspension
Tweeter and woofer...and they're speakers

Woofer: 8" laminated long throw woofer with rubber surround
Small woofer... made of paper. paper is common because it's rigid and lighter than aluminum... 10" woofer would be "good" 12" might be too muddy because it's heavy and hard for the magnet to move(and stop)

Tweeter: 1" throat compression horn 60(h)/40(V)
just like practically every other tweeter

Frequency Response (-10dB): 55 Hz-20KHz
thats probably +-10dB... meaning not flat and poor low end 50hz cutoff probably starts roll off at 300hz or higher. ...expected with an 8" woofer.

Impedance: 8 Ohms
the ammout of force necessary to move (and stop) the speaker... higher the better..average is 8ohm... nice is 16ohm... freaky audiophile goes up to 32ohm. PA is 4ohm...

Power capacity: Noise: 70 watts; PGM 140 watts; Max 280 watts
loud enough

Sensitivity (dB/2.8V, 1m): 88dB
Thats pretty much the signal to noise ratio... so it's a little quieter than a Rode NT1 mic... as far as hiss goes.

Crossover frequency: 5KHz (12dB/Octave)
5khz and above goes to the tweeter, everything else goes to the woofer... I think thats a little high... I think it's normally 3khz...

I don't quite get you on this one. Are you saying these would have poor bass quality?

Not necessarily poor "quality", just doesn't go very low...good nearfield monitors go down to about 35Hz or so...it's nice to go from 20Hz to 20kHz, but with woofers as small as nearfields usually have it's not that common.

Gotcha. Thanks! Nice to have some frame of reference for all those specs you always see.

yeah, also bear in mind a lot of the smaller speakers have a "reflex tube" which allows it to go down to lower frequencies but e bass spectrum is muddy... I usually just stuff a sock in it.... but I'm monitoring off of two pairs of sterio speakers a the moment :P
