Ok, so I posted my first ever "real" recording and would love for someone to give me some feedback. If you read the description you'll find that I never truly got to finish it. But still, I would truly appreciate some feedback from yall as you can at least hear the direction I was going.

So if I knew how to link to it I would, but I don't :) It's called "Shoved It In" under HRCPro in the "Rock" section as there was no selection for "hillbilly punk metal".

I put the link in for ya Cpt.

Tripps, make that thing downlaodable!

I loved it, OD and Jim you guys will love it as well. I think Hue will dig it as well. Oh hell, everybody will dig it. Starts out all nice and kinda twangy, the vox start to bring on the heavier feel. The chorus come along and backs up the nice twangy, yet strangely madening feel. By the end of the second verse you know something else is coming down the pipe. Then after that second chorus all hell breaks loose!

Hillbilly Punk Metal just about sums it up.

Excelant mix by the way. I got carried away there typing while listening. You need to post more like this one. my son Tuna would go nuts for this one.

Wait, I just realized that you have a son named Tuna?

Yep, he has had the nickname from birth as he was named after the person who really pushed me into music much deeper then I was. His real name is Anthony or Tony for short. But most of my music related friends know him as Tuna. And most here do as well.

Darn good recording for a first attempt at recording!! In fact, its a REALLY good mix!!

Indeed, I can hear the lot (drums are nice and crisp especially), guitars, bass and a good vocal tone right slap bang in the middle just nice!

Yep, and to boot, its a cool song ;-) !

Indeed, good nae GREAT work..you sure you havent done this before ;-D !

Good stuff.

Not really no, I did a lil with a computer mic and a drum machine a long time ago. I bought gear about 3 years ago to record with and have spent that time reading websites and figuring out different techniques to make drums sound good cause I just didn't get it. I would basically record a few minutes worth of drums and then try all the different things I read. I'm rather obsessive when I start enjoying something :)

Alas, my next recording will have heavier guitars and be speedier, this is when I will be needing some help, I tend to mud things up.

On the drum mics, I mic all drums (5 piece) use 2xC-2's for overheads and a c-1000s for a room mic.

Nice first outing!

The drums sound ace, i'd put up a kick mic next time as that was slightly lacking. Was the guitar recorded quite quietly? It sounds like it needed a little more room for the sound to breath, turn the amp up and move the mic back a little. Vocals are very impressive for a first tune. Good mix too.

Nice work!

Rigs - I meant I mic all 5 of the drums using an audix set and then also use the C-2's and the C1000s. So the kick is indeed mic'd as are all pieces.

The thinking behind this song was to have the guitar quiter and the bass quite loud similar to a mexican styling. But yeah, the guitar was recorded direct using a line6 HD147, I indeed kept the volume down somewhat on purpose in the mix but overdid it as I was using HD500 headphones and had no monitors, it sounded great until I threw it on other stereos :)

I never really got to finish the mix (stolen) but... yeah the kick got overrun by the bass guitar as I'm not quite good enough at scooping the needed freq's to seperate them, I tend to have this problem alot. Any tips/tricks would be much appreciated. I also went overkill on the vocals with reverd or chorus, I've learned my lesson there though.

p.s. And really, thanks for the feedback very much. It helps solidify things I had suspected already. I really did try very hard though and just seemed to hit a brickwall. For the odd parts you found, what would you do to fix em? Would you just turn em up a lil, or would you do some eq'n to seperate the bass/kick?

I'd always try pushing up the volume a little before EQing - i think that's good practice.

The guitar is fine in the mix, it's a good level, i meant though that it sounds a little too close as a sound (which makes sense as it was through a line6), i'd personally go for an amp next time, get a little distance in there.

I usually hit brick walls, come back a day or so later and it's often glaringly obvious what to do. Shame you had this stolen dude, but at least it's a pretty darn good mix anyway.

Ok, I think I get what your saying. I have tried both ways (amp vs. line6) but this was back when I had no good mics, will try again. Just a quick question though, is there something I could use to push the guitars back a bit when I do use the line6?

Ok, an update on my guitar recording. I had never really though about it but the amp model I configured (which sounds great live) was setup to not emulate anything as it is being pushed to a marshall cab. This signal coming direct out of the xlr into my PC sounds too close as stated.

Sooo... I installed line6 edit and configured the tone I wanted, and then did a cab simulation which gave me a completely different tone. Then I also applied an "off axis SM57" mic emulation that gave me a much more realistic tone for recording, I tried it last night and am happy with the results, go line6!!

I also did another setup where I ran the Left out through the xlr and then used a real sm57 on the cabinet for recording a stereo signal, this also gave me a completely different sound that I was happy with.

Thanks for the input on that Rigs, this was something I had struggled with overall but just never realized what was bothering me.

Man I should have kept up on this thread. Tripps, I had no idea you were not using LIne 6 edit. Man I would be lost without it. And yes indeed the cabinet set up and the mic set up are of premium importance for getting direct quality.

As for setting up a live mic. I will usually still run the stereo analogs direct in to 2 tracks, then set up a singal mic on one of the PR-15 and record that in on antoher track in mono. What a differance when it comes to getting the extra bit for real feedback type stuff. It can really help add some thump when I cant get my patch just right. An it also can be an eaasy way to thicken a guitar track up without having to track 2 and 3 times.

As well, get the Line 6 Monkey going as well and get all your updates done. That will really be a big help in the way the thing sounds.

Make sure and back up all your patches though as it will install a new set up tweaked for the newer rig.

I used to use edit on my laptop, just hadn't installed it on the desktop yet. Never got the monkey though, I'll have to grab that.

So how do you pan the guitar with that setup.. L<----M---->R ?

Yep, the stereo analog outputs left and right are panned to their respective places and then the mic is set right smack down the center. I really only use the stereo set panned hard like that if there is a chorus or something like a delay that needs the stereo image. Otherwise I will record them as 2 seperate tracks instead of a stereo track. Which honestly is the normal way I do it and only keep it stereo as I stated above it it needs to be. Otherwise I will set them up as 3 seperate mono tracks and give each one a little differant EQ treatment for thickening things up a bit.

Oh ya, and the Line 6 Monkey will do all the work of updating the POD for you. Simply let it search out what you need and the screen will tell you what you have and what you need to be current.

I don't have a POD though, it will perform the same task on the HD147?

Nevermind, don't answer that, I'll just read online and install it tonight.

I love the weekends, so much time to sit and veg in front of the PC.

I do believe so. You can hook it up via USB correct? As far as I know, the Line 6 Monkey works with all the Line 6 products. If you are hooked up via USB or even midi it should work just fine.

Oh ya, I didnt find any definate answer in their faqs section . It just stated all Line 6 Products that can go online.

It installs, it goes online, and there is not one single update :( Can't really complain cause I love the amp, but I was getting all excited for 2.0.
