Best of the Worst

A little while back I think it was Noize and Hue got the idea to do a "Best of the worst" thread. The rules were the recording or the performance had to be bad. I'm kicking this thing off with two that the recording AND the performance were pretty bad. I would say enjoy but I'm not that cruel. WWW.soundclick.com/erikwatts The tracks are "rest in peace" and "I need someone"

I could show you what bad really is, but I don't think I want anybody to hear just how bad I can sound. LOL

Those 2 really aren't bad. :)

Rest in peace, now thats trippy indeed! Its not really hideous though, close but not real bad. Accept maybe the chorus. :-)

I need someone, you sure liked that flanger didn't ya? I'm gonna have to listen a few more times as it remeinds me of another band but their name is stuck somewhere in the back of mmy mind. Again real trippy feel to it.

And ya, it was Hue and myself having a chuckle as I was cleaning the old cassette closet out. I might have time yet this week to get a couple really bad ones up.

The really sad part about those two songs is that we thought we were writing "hairband" rock. I think we missed by a long shot.
I put two more up, from about a year or two after the first songs. The recording was done by just a simple tape recorder set downstairs so you will hear people walking in and out. These are "Kill The Milk Man" and "Painted Skies" www.soundclick.com/erikwatts On the kill the milk man song, the singers mother was trying to call us and the ringing was recorded but in some places it actually fits with the song!

Okay those qualify in the bad recording dept, but not a bad performance and the songs are pretty dang good, especially Kill The Milkman. :D

I dug one up that qualify's on both counts. This one I never really finished and more recorded just so I wouldn't forget it, but I did anyway, and probably for the best. LOL

Diemusik, I agree that those do have the bad recording quality going for them. But as OD stated, musicly they are not bad. Painted skies reminds me of an old recording I have on vinyl of Jim Morrison singing while so blatantly out of it to Hendrix jamming at some club. The album was called Woke up this Morning and Found Myself Dead. And it really sounded like someone was dead or dying, especially Morrison.

OD, that isnt really a bad song at all. I do agree the recording is not up to what we hear from you now. But the tune was kind of catchy for me at least.

OK, now I will have to make a big effort to get something up tonight or tommorrow.

I just finished recording one of my originals, and it sounds horrible!

I made everything waaay too complicated (especially the drums :P) and it doesn't glue because I can't pull any of the parts off haha.

Back to the drawing board.

Noize, when I dug that one out of the archives and listened to it I was thinking I could maybe do something with it now and make a song out of it. Definitley have to lose that high part. LOL

Whew... It's pretty depressing when your "worst efforts" are as good as anything I'll ever come up with!! Diemusik, I agree with OldDog that those are actually pretty good performances (yes, the recordings need work). OldDog, that's a great song! (And don't you dare lose the high part...I think it is one of your trademarks, and makes the song a lot better. Michelle, those are both worthy efforts that you might want to revisit!

You're all going to have do a lot better than that if you want to make us cringe! :-)

Gotta agree with Jim, Michelle those are both very worthy efforts to my ears, even the recordings are pretty good!

Jim, I couldn't do the high part these days with lungs full of helium LOL I'll have to dig a bit more but I'm sure I have some even worse recordings/performances!

Although the performances were top notch, I always thought the recording of Chicago's "Make Me Smile" was hideous. It sounds like they used an old wire recorder or something. What was that all about?

OK Michelle, I will admit you have come along way vocally. But Dont Know What to Do isnt really that bad. I liked the way you mixed the voices and the placement of the seperate parts. That might be something worth revisiting when you have the time. I have to admit it was kind of catchy as CS stated above.

Things to come would as well be something that could easily be redone with the skills you have today. I really liked the guitar licks, they worked well with the vocal part.

When I get the ones I intended to use up then you will see what erally bad performance and recording is all about. I know I will win for most disgusting sounding recording, even though I wasnt behind the controls, I could have done something about the mix and didnt.

I've been going thru my archive on my server and found a bunch of stuff I transfered from tape back in 2001, man there are some pretty bad ones in there LOL. Mostly Beatle covers, but a few original songs as well I'd completely forgotten about, one or 2 of which I might try and redo.

ive added the first ever version of uncle dude's 'blame the neighbors,' in my profile.

this version was written and recorded on the afternoon of the band's inception.

recording is through a PC mic in the other room, in a basement, behind closed french doors. there is no amplifier for the keyboard. the singer has no mic and is merely yelling. i think this is truly, truly horrible.

oh btw please, if it is too annoying, make sure to at least skip to 1:30, where it goes falsetto. and at the very end, a phone starts ringing loudly, so dont miss that.

lol

OK, your winning so far. That is one wicked sounding recording for sure. You can almost hear the plastic of the poor little microphone melting. The phone ringing was the perfect ending for it as well. Leaving it in and just ringing after the music stops was really a touch of genious.

Olddog your remember when was a little rough but the tune is good. I would like to hear a finished version of that one.

Michelle yours are not bad either. I know what you mean by thinking they were greatest thing since sliced bread, that how I felt about my "painted skies" song at the time. I wrote the words and the music on that one and at the time thought it was my stairway to heaven. lol I was much youger then.

Forty, olddog beat me to it, I was going to ask if it was the neighbors on the phone. lol Most of my recordings from my high school band days have phones rigning on them. The singers mother called the house every 10 minutes or so while we were practicing. I dont know why she thought we could hear it. :)

Thanks Diemusik, I started to play around with it this weekend and instead came up with a new song I'm working on. <G> But I think I'm gonna revisit that one soon as I'm finished with the new one.

i fell compelled to post blame the neighbors' horrible lyrics, which are part of what makes it so bad.

my dad used to make me
run the mile
he nev-er!
let us stop!
is there another word for staircase?

running/never stopping/always searching/blame the neighbors!

sometimes i had to
run even farther
really made my stomach hurt
i want to eat some fries
my dad always tried to make us fat!

running/never stopping/always searching/blame the neighbors!

(falsetto)
it embarasses me! (x8)

and while the phone is ringing, you can hear:

'stop it'
'oh, that hurts my head.'
