Is this any good?

I'm wondering if these "Q-tuner" pickups are as good as the directionless, rambling preface would lead readers to believe.

www.q-tuner.com/preface.shtml

I'm having a hard time decifering if this is truly revolutionary...and their download area doesnt actually say what it is I'm downloading. I'm assuming they are sound samples of it in action but idk...but it looks good, I gather that it has much more dynamic range and they are making one for 7-string which I reaaaally need.

Yep, they are not cheap by any means. I have read a couple other reviews of them. Mostly good. I personally have not heard the ones dB has in his Washburn so I cant comment on the sound. The one thing I did read was they do not add color and have a very pure sound. It might not be exactly what you are looking for if you are a heavy ditortion guy. But I think dB has gotten them to crunch pretty good if I am not mistaken.

ohh, well my thought was that the clear sound would provide the perfect start point to then add the distortion and come out with a clean, powerful sound, as opposed to the horrible muddy bass output of the duncan performers on my Schecter elite007. Is this logic misguided?

But by Price? I mean like literally, what do these go for? lol

Ya, they are supposed to be and the reviews stated they are a very clear point to start from for high gain stuff. No added crap.

I believe the humbucker type go for about $160.00 each. That would be the GL model. He does not state though if you can get them in an F-spaced unit which I would need for my Ibanez.

ohhh nvm, I found the prices, around 160$ for one. That doesnt sound too bad. I mean you can usually get a good pair for that much but it still isnt nearly as high as I expected with all of this talk of being really expensive. But still, what is your take on my logic for its interaction with distortion?

ohh you beat me to it Noize...I am craving these pickups. I must look into it more. The download doesnt work for me with their demos, but I have been wondering for a long time, why pickups are so dated in their design with very little improvements. This seems to be what I was picturing.

However, I don't know how to install pickups myself so the install alone would end up costing another 80 bucks or so. Anyone know of a good site that walks you through the install process? Of course if its a tad more tricky than I think, then I wouldnt want to screw anything up. But it looks like just soldering a few wires and screwing it in...

I agree with you on that point. I have tried several pickups that were of the high output non-colored type. And they worked really well for just that purpose. I wish I still had that guitar. But I am very happy with my DiMarzio's the way I have my electronics set up. I run Evolutions in the bridge and neck with a FastTrack II in the middle. I run a single volume knob with no tone knobs at all since they just add noise in my book. All 3 pickups are set up with coil tap switches for Full hum, Single coil and parralell cirquit. It gives me all the tone options I would ever need. And the main 5 way switch is still used in my highly modified Ibanez. The only thing I cant do is run all 3 pickups at once. but it is a simple matter of adding just one switch if I ever choose to go that route. But I doubt I ever would.

But as for the Q-Tuners, if I buy another Ibanez to modify and his pickups will work with and F-spaced bridge set up, then I will definately be buying a set for the same reasons you state.

I dont know how the Q-Tuners are wired, if they have coil tap options or not. But I am guessing they come with a good instruction sheet. And if you are not going the coil tap route, then yes it is just undo the old pickup wires and solder the new ones in their place. I would imagine his pickups wire color are the same standard color on most brands.

awsome, I will look into the whole installation process then. Thats a very interesting and good approach to just leave the tone controls out of the picture. I am positive I will be doing the same. I'm thinking of plopping one in the bridge of my Dean Avalance Ultra-7 but I don't know how long that "coming soon" post has been up for the 7-string pickup :(

Hey Goldenmean87 check out the Dimarzio website, they have a very nice collection of wiring schematics to give you any idea of whats involved. That "coming soon" for the 7 string pickup has been up there for a few months by the way.

Just to add to the pick up switch thing,my strat had been fitted with a separate switch for each one.Now its back to the standard 5 way which is quicker to use,but you could get a good sound with the neck and bridge switched on although all three was too much of a mixture.

Yep, losing the tone control is something I have done for a while. Not only do they discolor the pickups real tone, but in some cases they can cut the output as well.

As for the 5 way switch Hujambo. I did leave mine in at its standard fromat which runs basically the same as the strat type switch. I just added coil tap switches to each individual pickup to give me more control over the tone and gain output of the guitar. The purpose was to duplicate as many set ups as I could without having to buy 16 differant guitars to get there.

That must be one cool guitar.Yes I never touch the tone knobs only by accident, then it sounds dull.
