Hey, i think this question would apply to sampling, but it isnt really my field so wouldnt know.

Basically, my drummer is a bit of a "monkey see...monkey do" kind of character - when he sees something he thinks is cool, he has to do it lol.

Recently he saw the new motley crue dvd and wants to be like tommy lee and have some sort of trigger (presumably a touch-sence pad) to set off a sampled recording. I believe tommy lee had a trigger that he hit with his stick and then a voice would say "lets get dirty, lets get ******".

Any way, he now wants to add this to his kit and he been asking me to find out how to do it. so here i am, how can you make your drum kit shout obsenities to a crowd? lol

cheers fellas

I'll leave it in sampling for now, as I think it pertains. Someone may come along and move it to gear gab though.

Anyway, what you need first is a sample of the obsenity you wish to shout, and then you need to have some sort of trigger hooked up to the drum kit. I really don't know much about the subject, so i can't help aside from point you to a link that may help you, may not. www.zzounds.com...-Triggers--2502

You will need a MIDI drum trigger to start with. Here is a cheap set of two www.zzounds.com/a--884907/item--IONIDP01.

The quality of drum triggers is mainly gauged by velocity levels/expressiveness, but you can go cheap since you simply want to trigger a sound and thats all.

You will then need to run the MIDI cables from the trigger pads to a Sampler. I would think that a hardware sampler would be better for gigs and live performance, but that may cost you some bucks. You can go with that or a software sampler and a reliable computer to run it. With a computer, you will need a MIDI interface. Here is the most basic which will do the trick for one pad www.zzounds.com/a--884907/item--MDOUNO

After that you just need to know how to use your sampler and load in a sound which is pretty simple. You will also need amplification and speakers to play the sound obviously. Any questions just ask.

the trigger pad would first need to go to a trigger module in order to convert the signal into midi... You could buy a cheap set of yamaha drum pads ...basically a toy... that has midi out though.

I suppose you are right...although I have seen Roland triggers with MIDI. I'm really not into electric drums...but the yamaha drum pads may be a good idea and that would even allow several sounds to be played with ease and for cheap.

I have a sampler and all I would do is record whatever you want into it (or copy the file using a sandisk card). My sampler has 3 banks of 8 pads to give you a total of 24 different...uh.. words. Then just tap the appropriate pad. For something really interesting, check out Mick Fleetwood's "drum suit" that he wore on tour.

If anyone remembers Bella Fleck and the Flektones. The drummer Victor Wootens brother Roy Wooten aka Futureman actually used a very cool hand built drum controller that was built like a guitar. It was of course called the Drumitar. HE built it from a unit built be a company called Synthaxe. He had the only one. It was pretty cool to watch him play, but it is the ugliest thing you will ever lay eyes on. www.flecktones.com/the_guys/futch.asp

the wootens (reggie and victor) play at a club called Third and Lindsly (the corner roads names) weekly...they both live in nashville somewhere...it's BADASS! i've seen 'em 5 times...the solos drag on a bit, but it's always like a religious experiance!....

good stuff
