Keystation Pro 88 as a control surface?

Well I am interested in purchasing the M-audio Keystation Pro 88 MIDI controller soon and I was wondering if it would also function as a fully operational control surface as well. It has many controls including buttons, rotary knobs, and 9 faders so I think I would be able to use it succesfully with Sonar to control the tracks etc.

On the website it lightly mentions that it can work with Reason and Live but those arent quite the same as Sonar and Cubase. So if anyone knows for sure that this would work just fine as a control surface or have any other input please let me know.

Here is the unit on the M-audio website.

Cool idea, I should look into that for my Radium...we should have a file sharing area here to share mapping files for things like that...

I don't know why it wouldn't work.

holy crap that's a hause daddy controller!

just about anything that can send MIDI messages can be used to control sonar, so i'm gonna say that's a big 10-4 good buddy, you're good to go and ready to launch! man now i want one.

i wonder why it dosn't have aftertouch though...

muahaha, yes I was very impressed with this sucker when I first fooled around with it a year or two ago. I was confident that it would work as a good control surface but I figured I would make sure because I have made dumb purchases in the past due to being too lazy for researching.

Seems like a great value too, I can grab it for $400 bucks now at GC and I'm going this monday for the memorial day sales so it may be less, I have gotten some great deals on memorial day :)

I'm mainly using this for key related instruments like Piano, Harpsichord, organ etc. So I dont think the absence of aftertouch should be a prob. I could get a cheaper small model for performances with synth instruments that would benefit from the aftertouch. Unless I'm missing something...are there any models near this price range with similar stats including aftertouch?

goldennmean, yes it will work that way. You will simply go into Sonar and right click the parameter you want to control, say the pan knob or track volume. Then hit learn and move the slider or knob you wish to use. Then click finish and your done. Now you will be able to record the automation moves you do with the sliders and knobs.

Dont forget to arm the track to record automation though and then set it to playback automation as well.

I'm suprised it doesnt have aftertouch. I believe the radium 49 dB and I have has it. They just may not mention it.

But in that price range, there are not really any other models with that much control, and hammer weighted keys.

Thanks Noize, you even saved me some trouble in figuring out how to assign controls once I buy it :)

I'm only vaguely familiar with all of the automation capabilities. I havent dug into it that much yet but I think I know how it would work.

I think there is some way to set it up so that you can play back all tracks and then use the faders to adjust things mid-song and it will save those adjustments. Then you play it all back and in the track view, you can see the faders moving the way you moved them during the recording. Am I correct?

Yep, you are correct indeed.

As for using things for controllers. I have even used my PODxt with the FBV controls assigned to do stuff in Sonar and P5. You can even send controller data with jsut the knobs on the POD itself.

I'm jealous as my big friggin expensive Fatar controller only has a couple sliders and 3 pedals which I can assign. I do use Tunas Radium though and it works a charm.

cool. Hehe, I wonder, could I use my old Alesis HR-16 drum machine as a controller? This thing is pretty old but it has MIDI so I would guess it could work.

I think the only thing the HR-16 will send is note and vleocity data. I dont believe the volume slider is linked into the midi output data stream. But yes, you should be able to use the pads live with software synths as it should send the pad data as a midi stream.

I used to own several of those bad boys back in the day. As well a stack of MMT-8's for recording sequanced midi data. My entire rig back in the day consisted of all midi gear like that, linked via a time code generator to my 2" tape machine.

Yeah, I just have the HR-16 collecting dust in the corner so I thought maybe I could just get some use out of it to control a few things but I have other new units with alot more MIDI assignable buttons and controls so it looks like the HR-16 will stay put. lol that thing came out a year after I was born...

I loved the sounds they had, still do really. I sampled mine before I sold the last one.

Well I went to the memorial day sale at GC and I nearly pooped my pants. The sales they had were seriously really good. I ended up getting the Evolution U-control UC-33 for $80 with ac-adapter. On Zzounds, its $200 hehe. Plus I got the Keystation Pro 88 for $350. Great value I must say. I also swiped many cables for $0.99 each! 5 and 10 foot quality USB and MIDI among others. They also had many older but really nice Roland and Alesis full sized synth keyboards for like $300-$400.
