Yeah, I got thru your whole post, I always do.

Perhaps it's a tall critter getting your strawberry's...do you have deer or anything like that? That is what has been eating my tree sapplings...

Just a thought.

Hehehe well thanks for the read :)

Yes, we have deer as well. But I'd think that a deer would eat the whole berry and not leave little tooth-marks and a half-eaten berry.

Those damn deer eat every flowering plant in our yard by mid-summer every year. I've tried all of the critter repellant I could find and nothing seems to deter them...our yard is just too enticing for some foul scent to keep them away.

Have you had any luck with anything that repels deer? Or rabbits or any pest for that matter?

I'm about to the point to where I'd club them to death if I had the chance!

Having gopher/rabbit problems myself.
As my house overlooks a barranca, there's little I can do. Every time I get rid of a batch, another lot shows up.

Soft-BB gun....might work on the pesky wabbits.

Bloodmeal repels deer as I recall...

I have some little sappling Austrees (I hybred tree of Poplar and Willow) and deer kept nibling it, Bloodmeal seemed to help, but a four foot high chickenwire helped more...

There is lots of construction around here, forests being cut down so deer are moving, and having less places to move to, so it's been a battle, I feel bad for these deer actually. This city is pissing me off with all it's construction, thankfully I back up to a county preserve, so that will stay for a while...

I have Rabbits, lots of the little beggars. They are extremely brave and comfortable here. They dont even run except when the car is pulling in the garage, then they scurry out of the garage. But in the back, I can walk in the yard and they wont move or scurry away. But they eat my tulips and hostas.

Tad, I have a very nice accurate SoloCam I can send you. Its quiet, and deadly. A dear is no problem with it. In fact its been used on bear, boar and elk as well.

My problem used to be racoons. Put a radio in the garden for awhile until they drug it down into a swamp and drowned the thing so it would stop making noise. Large cats work well for repeling most anything, however once out of natural prey the have a tendency to eat you.

Now what the heck am I supposed to do with a gunned-down deer in my back yard? Drag it out to the street and pretend it was road kill?

Haha Walt, I'll remember to keep my consumer electronics away from the raccoons!

Last year, we had tons of rabbits. They ate absolutely everything in our yard. Then one day I stopped seeing them in the yard. Soon afterwards, I saw a fox trotting along the treeline and understood where all the bunnies went. Mr. Fox is my friend! But he must've moved out during the winter. I need to find him and convince him to come stay the summer in our woods again!

yeah, dnr frowns heavily on out-of-season deer showing up in someone's yard.

we had tons of skunks and rabbits around our yard too, but the neighbor across the street started setting live traps in the back of our yard, and 're-locating' the little buggers.

We've been pretty clear for quite a while now.

By "relocating", do you mean "taking them for a little swim"? Those live traps don't float hehehehehe

my parents had a problem of woodchucks living in a crawlspace... we covered the area with kyan pepper... it never came back... generally though, we shoot them.

Yeah we've got woodchucks as well. Those are mean little suckers arent' they? With those big yellow front teeth.

My dog is a pantywaste terrier that thinks that he's macho as long as his "prey" is either behind a fence or at least 20 feet away. Well he saw one of those woodchucks munching on our cherry tomatoes one day last summer and charged it. Well the woodchuck stood its ground, and the dog was totally confused that something didn't run from him. He immediately lost interest in the woodchuck.

He thinks he's big stuff because deer (the world's most timid and skittish animal) will run from him when he charges them. One day he took off after a deer and vanished from sight behind my neighbor's fence. After a little while he didn't come back so I got a little worried and walked around the fence to see what was up. There is my sissy of a dog, and the deer, about 20 feet apart, staring each other down. Then they just turned their backs to each other and hung out for a bit. I've never been so disappointed in my dog (OK that's a lie, he's had a few other episodes that have made me hang my head in shame hehehe).

So apparently the dog and the deer have come to an agreement of some sort. The chasing thing is apparently just a ruse to make the dog look good in front of me.

So little Ziggy Stardust isn't a deer hunter. But he's a menace when it comes to lizards and garter snakes! So reptiles of the midwest, bewarned!

that's funny.

we had a dog once, a lab / doberman cross, that would chase deer at their full speed. I don't think he ever caught one, but boy did he love to chase them.

Hey Tadpui:

Quote: "Now what the heck am I supposed to do with a gunned-down deer in my back yard?"

Easy: Cut it up into nice size pieces, and send it to me. Delicious! Venison is one of my favourite meats. I'll light the barbecue.

'sfunny you saying about your dog (love the name, by the way) not being a rabbit hunter. Our dog (well...the kids') is a Shih Tzu (but he's the size of a Lasa Apso). He runs into the yard barking, and runs at the rabbits....They hide behind a bush for a second, wait for him to pass, and commence eating. Not scared at all. The dog's rubbish. He's dead ferocious and territorial with the dog next door....on the other side of the fence. Must be a terrier thing.

We did have a huge gopher snake in the garden last year (my hero), and he was great at keeping the gopher population down. I miss him.
Gas......gonna gas them this weekend...

Unless I can find a pet fox somewhere...

Ewwww cockroaches! I hate those things. We also have some flying roaches that come out of the woods right after dusk every night in the summer. They flutter around a freak me out...I usually just go inside when I hear them starting to buzz around.

Even if I weren't phobic about flying insects in the first place, these would still make me scream like a little girl. They're about an inch to two inches long, which is too damn big for a roach!

Oh, man if it's one thing that gives me the creepy-crawleys, it's bugs ! Snakes, rats, even spiders I don't mind, but big-dumb-eating-type bugs, freak me out !

I just about lost it watching that 'giant insect scene' on the new King Kong .

Yeesh !

Where I grew up, South London, we had a huge number of stag beetles. These things are about three inches long, with huge jaws. They'd fly around in the summer and freak everyone out. When I first came to California, I thought I saw them flying...but they turned out to be hummingbirds.

Strange, I read recently that the stag beetles are an endangered species, and they are found most commonly in the area I grew up (due to all the rotting wood for their larvae - there are lots of parks/commons).

Good cockroach story:
When I first came out here I was sitting at a bar, having a nice Martini, and suddenly a creature like I'd never seen before runs across the bar. "Oooh," I said, "What's that?"
The bartender suddenly gives me another Martini, and tells me he's really sorry, and here's a free drink, with more in the offing.
Cool...
My girlfriend of the time whispers in my ear, "That was a 'roach...He'd get in trouble if the health ispectors knew about it...."
Poor, naive (and drunk) me.

Oh, man, a per store I worked in part time for a while years ago had the worst roach infestation I have ever personally seen.

When it was going out of business employees were buying up fish tanks and such, I went to move a 55-gallon that was in a lower shelf, when I did dozens of roaches were crawling all over each other to get out from under it I dropped it back down and never looked back...yuck...

Later I had heard the people that fumigated the place after the fact said it was the single worst infestation THEY have ever seen...now THAT is saying something.

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>>

Bought some "Uncle Ian's" (good name!!!) gopher repellant. 98% dried blood (from what it does not say), and 2% inert matter and bonemeal (from what it does not say).
Well, 1/2 cup down the hole....sprinkle some around....

It worked!!!!! No new gopher evidence anywhere!
Of course, I put it down, and then it rained like mad! Had to reapply.
$14 well spent - methinks...

Hopefully one of those spiders or reptiles will take care of that roach for ya :D

I do a lot of gardening in the flower beds that surround the foundation of our house. Little spiders, lizards and snakes love the shelter that the shrubs and plants provide, so they're everywhere out there. I can't say I love them but I consider them as being on my team...we both hate other bugs and we all do our darndest to get rid of them. So we've reached an agreement of sorts. Spiders, lizards, snakes: you can stay as long as you don't tick me off hehehe

Chap, I'll have to look around for this repellant. Some subterranean little varmint has made a total mess of my lawn, and its time I declared war on him!

We had a mid sized reptile living with us for several years here. He was a Bearded Dragon, about 18" long and acted like a dang cat. He loved being taken for a walk or bike ride. He would just sit on mine or Tuna's shoulder and soak up the sun. He sadly passed away a little over a year ago, but we will replace him soon. As the large terarium we built for him is built into the corner of the living room upstairs and it is sad to see it sitting empty.

Oh ya, the point of the story is his favorite snack was cockroach. The big nasty ones. His normal diet was large crickets, but for the big treat once a week We would go and get him a big ole' cockroach. He knew when it was coming too, when he would see you come with that little white bag and shake it to dizzy the roach a bit to release in his cage. They never lasted more the a couple seconds and he would scarf it up and crunch a way.
