Here's a little something i recorded for a friends band last night. They're a 5 piece, but this is a track with just the bassist playing acoustic, the singer and me playing shaker. strictly no drums or bass on this was the order, so i did as they asked, the assisted in the mixing and everyones happy. that said, i'd still be interested to hear what you guys think :

LOL

I saw that in my email and wondered what you were doing.

How did you mic the acoustic, and what mic? Very bright sounding guitar. ITs kinda funny how the lack of drums and bass make you take notice of things you might not even hear in a differant mix.

Anyway, I loved the vocal mix of all the voices. They seemed to move around at times, very interesting. I like the lead vocal bit, nice and simple, kind of dry sounding compared to the guitar. But then the harmony parts kick in and fill it up nicely. The guitar part has a lot of room sound, which is really nice and sits will keeping it apart from the vocal. Gives it the image of the guitar player sitting behind the vocalist.

Nice shaker part there as well flame. Did you sing at all on it? I liked that last harmony part before the ending, really kool as well.

Over all that one is very interesting and will be going in my playlist for sure.

Hey flame,

Like the harmonies and the lyrics are intmate without being cheesey. Nice to hear some Englishmen singing like Englishmen. Do you know the Stars of Aviation. They were at Cambridge around your time.

Cool little kick in 'tearing up...'

See you.

Hey guys, thanks for checking it out

Noize : the guitar was recorded in a marble floored room with some careful deadening on a Samson condensor USB mic straight into the laptop. It is a very bright sound, and perhaps a little too bright, i may tweak.

I found it kinda hard to mix when theres nothing much to mix it in with, though I've done enough solo acoustic guitar stuff of my own to know how too really.

The singer wanted the start of his vocal to sound like he was sitting on a sofa next to someone singing in their ear and then for it to open out as the song progressed. So i sat him on the sofa, laptop on my knees and got him to sing those opening parts. Coulda reverbed them up a little but he loved the dry sound and hated anything with even a hint of verb on, and he was the guy paying. Very sharp ear, couldnt fool him even a little with the mixes, he knew when i'd tweaked something even if it was very minor.

I didnt sing on it, I only played shaker because the guys wanted to have a break.

Flashman :

Never heard of them, might have to check them out. These guys are all form Cambridge - is it a similiar sound?

bet theres tonnes of typos in that mesage, for which i apolgise. its been a long long day of mixing...

Ya, I liked the vocal the way it sat. Didnt really need any verb on it at all. I think it may have meshed with the guitar if it had any. That USB mic sound' like it worked very well then if ya ask me.

The marble floor, that explains the sound on the guitar then as well. I personally kinda liked it, maybe a bit much but not really over the top at all. Once the vox start you really dont notice the brightness mech at all. In fact that is probably what is keeping it at a distance from the singing parts. And that is what makes the mix soud pretty dang good in my humble opinion.

Nice job flame. Vocals are really captured well IMO, especially nice when the harmony parts kick in. I agree with Noize the guitar tone fits well with the vocals, if it was more warmed/fuller I think it would probably take away from the vocals. Very nice!

Vintage stuff Flame my man..vintage stuff.

Reckon Noize and OD have covered my thinking here but I do like the sound of that geeeetar in relation to all else...as the guys have said, over production of that would negate from it's sound rather than adding to it.

And, a nice gig by the sounds of it...good stuff mate.

Keep em coming...

Coco.

ok, heres how i hear it. im not trying to shut your recording down at all, it has plenty good going for it, but, i know critism offers more then praise, so thats what im going to give.

I think there a a few timing issues throughout the song. espcially where it picks up, at about 2:32 into the song, the second guitar doesnt seem to strum correctly with the first guitar, just seems awquard to me.

And, unless my ear's are broken, is the VERY last note of the song off? the veyr last guitar note seems to have been botched, which is a nightmare when recording haha. at least for me it is.

Im not sure if i like how the guitar sounds. haha, not to be rude at all. It sort of sounds like a cheap guitar to me. where did you mic it? I liek how the room sounds, the natural verb on it, it shines through a lot when he slaps the guitar to mute the strings. but i jsut seems like it was miced way far up on the neck or soemthing.

now i really like how you did the vocals/backup vocals. they really take the cake. I love the panning, and the whispering part. I love that part near the end how you used a delay(or soemthing) on "neighbors" and how it rings on for a very long time. i really like how subtle that came out, its a veyr nice added touch.

i could be totally off on all of this, not being have as talented of a recording artist then everyone on here, i guess i dont have any room to say much, but its just my 2 cents.

yeah, i can agree with lots of those points meltdown, thanks for taking the time to post. i changed the mix accordingly, but some aspects (likebeing out of time) the band dont WANT fixing on prinicipal. crazy huh?

I think it sounds pretty cool but here are a few things you could try.
Do a narow band EQ sweep on the guitar and find the "harsh" sounding places. Then cut them out. Also a little compression would not hurt either.

Well thank you flame. I really joined to help out with acoustics, but being a old studio dog I don't mind putting in a few tips here and there when I can.
