So My New M-Audio Axiom 49 Should Be Coming In Soon...

Well this is kind of embarassing, but this will actually be my first midi controller. I've always put in all of my music note by note with a mouse, but I've decided it's time to get myself a keyboard.

I decided to go with the Axiom 49. I played the 25 and it felt great, but I didn't want to go with the 61 key so the thing will fit on my desk.

Now for the question:

I'm going to be using the keyboard for the most part with Reason 3.0 and FL Studio. I've never had to set up a midi controller for use in a program before, so I'm not exactly sure how it works. I read through the manual online, but there was a bit too much tech garble and it's kind of difficult to do without the keyboard in front of me. What I really want to know is how difficult is it to map out various functions to different sliders or knobs? For example can I just start up reason, right click a parameter and hit assign to knob or something? Well, I'd imagine it's not that simple, but I think you got the picture. Any input would be appreciated.

Hopefully REason has a learn function. IF so you probably right click on the parameter knob in Reason and click learn. Then just move the slider or knob on the Axiom and it will hook itself to that parameter.

If it needs to be assigned by controller number, then you will need to find out what controller number the Axiom is sending, or what number Reason needs to see and then assign that number in the Axiom's menu.

Well I'm just worried that I wont be able to set the drum pads and keyboard to different samples. The guys at Sam Ash had no idea what they were talking about and couldn't seem to set that up in the store, so I started to wonder if I could do it.

Reason does indeed have a learn function, but I rarely can make it work right for setting knobs and faders in the soft synths. Setting up drums and samples to use on your keyboard is a cinch though. Just go into your soft sampler (NN19 or NXXT) and it is pretty easy. On the NNXT you will have to open up the extended aspect of it. You may also have to press the octave down button on your keyboard if you want to control the drum samples from the Redrum drum machine.

Well no, that's not exactly what I mean. On the Axiom there is, of course, the keyboard, but then there is also a drum pad. I want to be able to control, say, a SUBTRACTOR with the keyboard and a ReDrum with the drum pad at the same time. With the set up they had over in the store they couldn't seem to get it to work, but I'd imagine it's possible.

Um, at the exact same time. I don't think that's possible. I'm on Reason 2.3 still, so maybe it's different, but only one rack element can be controlled by a single midi source at one time as far as I know. But you can easily switch which rack element is being controlled by the midi source.

Oh man. That seems like such an obvious feature to me. Well, thanks for the help anyway.

Fuzzy, you should be able to split the keys from the pads and assign differant note values to each set. Then in Subtractor set it to respond to the notes the keys are assigned to and set REDrum to respond to the notes the pads are assigned to. I plit my keyboard into 4 differant zones and have no problem at all setting things up like that.

Hmm, yea that sounds like what I need. I'll look over the manual and see if I can find some more info on splitting the keys from the pads.

Thanks!

You'll have to set Reason up to make sure they both act as seperate instruments. I know when running it via ReWire it will work that way.
