recording/midi interfaces

I am looking to get some equipment to record with and need some advice. I already have access to a Shure SM57 and Cakewalk Sonar. I want to be able to record guitars, bass, vocals, and plan to use midi for other instruments such as keys and drums. I only need to record one track at a time and am wanting to spend no more than $300-400 total. I looked at the TonePort, but was leaning towards something like the MAudio AudioBuddy since I can always use software modeling in Cakewalk. Would it be better for me to get an internal soundcard? I am recording to a desktop computer so I think an internal interface would be good, but would I have to buy a separate mic preamp? I also need a midi controller to use for keys and drums. What would you recommend for the best quality/versatility? Thanks for the help!

I would personally recommend the TonePort as it is perfect for a one-size-fits-all solution for guitar, bass and vocals. Accept direct input and pic inputs, the UX2 even has phantom power for the inevidible upgrade to a condensor mic.

I have to agree. The modeling alone for the guitars, bass and the mic pre amp models you can use for vocals are more then worth the price. And if there is a need for a midi interface you can pick up a 1 x 1 interface for under $50.00 these days.

I have several high dollar multi i/o audio interfaces and have found myself using the Line 6 Toneport UX-2 very often these days. I also own a fully loaded POD xt and still use the Toneport more often then that.

Thanks for the replies guys... any recommendations for a good (yet not too expensive) midi controller? I don't need much, I just want to be able to record basic keyboard parts and a drum track. Thanks again.

How cheap is cheap? Here is a partial list of some good compact units in a varied price range from zZounds. www.homerecordingconnecti...ard+Controllers

If you set a price range and it looks as if your needs are pretty simple I can help you pick the best in that price range.

Also, do you want it to have any type of controls like sliders or knobs for tweaking software synths?

I would most likely be looking in the $150-200 range. I don't know much about using synths, so I don't think I would use that capability any time real soon, although at some point in the future it might be useful.

Indeed then, the page i posted the link to above will contain a large variety in your price range. Any of those listed there would work well and all are simple and easy to set up and mantain. So I would say just take your pick for the the feature you want and go with one of those listed there.
