I need help with Recording Midi with Cubase

I just got the program and this is my first time ever using music software.

first of all, cubase can recognize the midi instrument but only every four seconds. if I'm playing the keyboard it'll play one note, be silent for four seconds and then play a nother note, etc.

And I can't record period. It recognizes the midi ports. I have both the track "record enabled" and I have the record button pressed on te control panel. When I press record on my keyboard, the cubase received the signals, but when I try to play it back there's nothing.

any would would be amazing. I'm pulling my hair out right now.

What version of Cubase do you have?
What kind of computer and specs?
What is the OS?
What kind of MIDI device?
How is it hooked up to the PC, MIDI or USB?
Do you have the newest drivers for your device?
Most recent updates for OS and Cubase?

I have cubase sx 3.0.1
I'm using an HP with 512mb RAM abd 160 GB of hard drive

I have Windows XP

I have a USB Uno MIDI interface (connects by USB)

Yeah, it says I have the right driver

And I think I have the most recent updates. I just got it this week.

Make sure...just cuz you got it recently doesn't mean it was just packaged, go to steinberg.net, microsoft.com and the manufacturer of that USB interface and make sure you have the latest versions of everything...that issue sounds like a bunk driver thing to me.

Ok I did some research and found out that the midi/usb device that I just bought has compatibility issues with all yamaha keyboards.
