Hi....will ALL current programmes run properly on the new 64 bit AMD/Intel processors, providing I use the current 32 bit Operating System....IOW...are the new chips 100% backward compatible? Also....I've read that top end audio programmes are written around the Intel specifications....is there any evidence that AMD's aren't? I currently use AMD with my old machine and I love it, but I'm planning on ordering a new PC for music only and I'd like to get a definitive answer on this....AMD or Intel.
Regards.....MAWD

Apr 11, 2006 09:36 am I've got a AMD 64 venice 3500. It's got w2k on it right now, and i'm running all my stuff on it so far. I'm putting xppro on it shortly (just received the CD) but it seems fine to me.
XP64 didn't seem too hot, didn't want to load much.

Apr 11, 2006 09:38 am thinking again, that's a real tough guarantee for anyone else to make, seeing as how we don't know what programs your running, auxiliary programs, or what hardware your using.
It can all have an impact.

Apr 11, 2006 09:51 pm I have had nothing but good luck running AMD as well. And yes, most software whould run just fine with a 64 bit processor. I do it on my wifes machine.
I have read through a lot of the tests and AMD seems to be ahead of the game as of now. Their chips seem to be rated to run steadier and as well are very under rated. Meaning the clock them down from were they will run normally. Most overclockers seem to prefer AMD as well for their stability in those situations, and that would seem to go right along with the fact they under rate them.

Apr 13, 2006 08:34 pm I personally use AMD in both of my machines. An Athlon 64 3200 and a Athlon 2500. I've owned both but I love AMD. Never had a problem with them and best bang for the buck! Intel you pay a premium for the same preformance for sure!

Apr 24, 2006 03:34 am Hi....I'm the guy who initially asked about chips....AMD or Intel. Along the way I learned a lot about the two big ones...AMD and Intel and Motherboards and all that kind of stuff. It certainly helped me in putting together a system for PC recording. In fact....I'm getting it built as we speak. I want to thank everyone who put in their experience and opinions etc. It sure helped me to decide which way to go when the time came to order a machine. Well that time came yesterday and the box is being built as we speak. Here's the system that I hope will do the job I have in mind, mainly creating loops off my Korg Triton Pro/Karma and flying them out to Acid....screwing with the data in Samplers and stuff....here's the system. I think it'll work well actually.

Apr 24, 2006 10:39 am Two jealous thumbs way up! (I must admit, you see a lot of ZIP drives being installed anymore...)
Apr 24, 2006 10:42 am Zip drive? What the hell is THAT for?! Mine has been collecting dust for the last 2 or 3 years...that was a pretty short lived trend.

Apr 24, 2006 09:00 pm Some samplers used them. And as well some had ports for hooking them up. I'm not sure I could even load some of the samples I use these days with the software samplers on a 100 meg disc.
But hey, mines still plugged into the older PC. And I still have a brand spanken new USB one in the box. Never even opened it.

Cool...thanks for that. the Zip??...yeah I know....I use them my Korg Triton Sampler...it would make it easy to just fly the data into a librarian.

Hi...I use Zips for my Triton setups...configs etc...nice to pull it out of the Triton, shove it into PC and SAVE a truckload of keyboard configs to Cd. Handy little buggers I think....

Some of you would be stunned by the amount of stuff Noize has in the "never been opened" condition. I sometimes think he has an issue with just NEEDING to spend money... :-)

OK, so I'm a pack rat, and a gear hore.
mawd, I figured the Triton was the one using the ZIP.
