Ive come to the realization that im completely clueless when it comes to alot of things. One thing in particular is compression. I run a roland 2400cd in a room we built in my garage, including a booth for vocals. Im pretty happy with our results considering im new at this but we are definitly missing that professional sound we would like to achieve. Everything I do as far as effects, eq, and compression i do using the software on the roland. I dont have any mic pre amps, outboard compressors or limiters, or anything like that nor do I fully understand what i would need or how to use them. I was just wondering if theres some good websites anyone knows or if anyone could give me some tips. Is there something I should get first. Theres just so many things that I think i need its hard to pick what is priority.
Thanks alot guys

the roland has preamps built in, that's the 16 xlr inputs, so you're set there for now. I wouldn't worry about upgrading them (or getting a better standalone preamp) until your needs warrant it. For now I'd think you're fine.
an outboard compressor is a pretty good next step. I don't have any outboard compression in my setup (yet) but it'll probably be pretty quick in line, once I get up and rolling. For my use, setting my gain safely usually will keep me safe, but not as well as a compressor will do. Plus, the compressor will fatten up vocals, and bass when you're tracking. You can do it later in the roland (i'd think) so that's probably not as much of an issue.
I use (software) compressor output gain, with a (software) limiter to increase the volume of mixed down tracks. It may not be an immediate issue for you, plus it may already be built into the roland, not sure.
I guess it's kinda hard to give good advice or ideas if I don't know what the roland is capable of. Plus, I'm working on a PC, so there's a lot of difference right there.
Sorry, doesn't seem to be much help.

I have a VS1680 which is a good machine, on the effects card you have all that you need as far as inbuilt compression goes and there are mastering set up's as well. I have a friend who recorded and mastered on his VS and got amazing results. There is a complete site dedicated to the VS its www.vsplanet.com i have since moved over to PC based recording due to flexability and more options.
