Can anyone suggest a reasonable inexpensive graphics card that supports two monitors. I looked at the older threads but they are old now. i would be willing to pay up to 150USD if needed

cheers then

I bought a higher end PNY card, still reasonably priced, but about 128 MB (maybe 256, I forget) of memory and performs very well.

I have a 5700 or something like that.

Be aware that one is PCIe, make sure you have a PCIe slot on your Mobo...it's one of the newer interface types so you gotta double check...iotherwise look for an AGP card.

Is there a simple way to check?

The machine is only 18 months old

yeah, RTFM :-)

(Read The F&%^*n Manual)

Bottom line, if it has PCIe (I would suggest it probably does not, 18 months is old, sadly) it would say so in the motherboard manual, or if it's a name brand it would say in the documentation somewhere.

Well, if you just wanna ask and find out wouldn't it be more prudent to post the make and model of your Mobo or PC so people actually had something to go by?

Friggin Frenchies...

Now thats an AGP that would serve well, I personally love ATI products, they are not the highest performing of card, but hold their own well, and have few compatibility problems...it's a great bet.

But first, you need to see what type of card you can take...may have to take it to a computer store have them open it and just look to see what kind of slot you have...

Thanks to this forum a couple of weeks back I started looking into dual monitors.
I now have a sweet dual system running
2 17" lcd screens

every day I go to work and sigh as I look at the single crt screen

once you go dual youll never go back

tru dat. i'm aching on this single 17" crt at work.

I code on dual at home, code on one screen, and output on the other. Man does that speed you up, and don't get frustrated finding the right window.

Plus, it's way smoother for tracking / mixing, well, mixing mostly.

I wouldn't mind moving further south into spain. but hey the business still needs me here unfortunately. I suppose i could always move stateside to the twin cities ;-)

i have just counted up what i have invested in my music passion and what is being ordered at present _ god it's scary

if i do get the dual monitors i will certainy have to curb the spending aftr that.

i'm looking at dual 17lcd right now, plus a dual agp that'll work in my biostar xgp slot.

I think we're progressing quite similar Kaos, though I'm not in france =).

What'd you get for screens, Kenicke? or anyone else, I'm having a 'female dog' of a time deciding on what to go with. There seems to be good and bad reviews of pretty much all of them.

I'm pretty settled on the ACER AL1722R now, it's height adjustable, pivot, tilt, has VGA and DVI.

TD has them if anyone's interested.

pjk, I just got the standard version of that one for the wife for Xmass. It is nice, but it isnt like looking at a regular moniter. I am not sure how Sonar and P5 will look on a flat panel, so I am skeptical on going that route here.

different how? I'm using my m-tracker on a LCD laptop, seems very fine to me. I'd think it would be pretty similar to that.

I'm curious as to how, as I haven't dropped the card on those yet (almost).

The color seems nicer but the contrast or sharpness is nothing like a regular VGA moniter. To me it just doesnt seem as finely defined as a regular moniter. Maybe I'm just not used to it but it doesnt seem as clear. Although I gotta admit there are some things that make it look really great. I put a desktop on there that I got from a sight DungBeatle turned me onto that has some astounding graphics and that looks very good. But as far as the regular windows frames and apps it looks dull and lifeless. Maybe it is the color that windows is using, as well as some of the other applications.

Anyway, I will have to go that route here if I want duals as I just dont have room for dual CRT's in front of me.

yeah, I think I agree. I swapped out my 15" lcd at work for a 17" crt. It seems more vivid.

But i'm in a space pinch as well. 2 17 crt would take up most of my space at home, so i'm gonna pick 'em up.

Thanks for the info.

Not to mention some CRT's (most) are a lot heavier...the picture on cheaper LCD's do pretty much suck, good ones, that are properly configured can be VERy vivid, but it sometimes takes tweaking time to set it up for the angle you look at it from and other such things...

Ya, I just need to mess with the settings. The good hi res graphics all look stunning. Its just the type is kind of fuzzy in some apps. Havent logged on here yet with it. I think will and try and adjust it that way as I know exactly how this place should look on a good moniter.

Oh yeah, Kaos2, I picked up an eVGA GeForce 6600 to go with the screens. It's got vga + DVI, and is PCI Express 16, and has 256m. it's got some turbo cache thing, which I think will use system memory as temporary storage, but I can't believe that it would be very fast. I'm going to turn that off if possible.

It was 60$us from tiger direct. I'll let you know how I get on with it, should be after the weekend.

well, the card I got was the 6200, not the 6600 like I thought. Oops.

Anyway, it's installed and working greatly. I received the two Acer 1722, and they're schweet! I'm super impressed with the quality of graphics, and text. I've got the two of them running on my studio PC, one on VGA, the other on DVI. They're both running at 1280 x 1024 @ 75hz.

Couldn't be happier. They have height adjustment (around 8 inches or so), plus they have tilt, plus they swivel side to side. Plus, they rotate over to a portrait type monitor. The software for the nvidia chipset will switch the screen for you so it's correctly aligned with the monitor. Windows looks wierd on a 1024 x 1280 monitor (instead of 1280 x 1024).

I got you beat on the XP load, Kaos. I got mine loaded a few nights ago. I'm looking for my multitracker CD now.
