New Setup

Hi, I pretty new to home recording and brand new to the site.

I was finally able to get enough cash to purchase some monitors and a M-Audio Delta 44.

I have a question about the cords I purchased. They say they have mono connectors which I don't think will matter, but I am not sure.

I will be running my instruments into a 4 channel PA and then running the PA into the Delta 44.

I really don't know what I asking here, I guess I just want to know this is going to work and I am not doing something wrong.

Thanks.

What output of the P.A. are you going to use to go to your delta?

ooh, if your PA is powered, then don't connect the main out to your computer, there'll be lots of 44 killing power, as the main out of powered PA decks are meant to push speakers.

If your PA is a mixer, un-powered, then you're fine. Mono is fine as well.

Thanks a lot for the warning, that would have been tragic.

Would I it be ok to use the main outs even if I kept the levels really low?

I would say this would still be a bad move as it is still likely to fry your card. Does your mixer have any other outputs? Mine has a "record out" that works for what you want to do.

Agree with Beerhunter here, don't use the main outs, if they're powered. It'd only take a slight over-judgement, and there's one dead 44 channel.

Your deck may have a 'tape out', or a 'control room out'. My peavy XR700 has a sum out section, as well as aux out (i think). I would think any of these would give you line level signal.

If each of your channels have an insert jack, then this would work quite well. Just plug a 1/4" jack only to the first click, so you don't break the signal. All the way (two clicks) will break signal, and you won't hear anything in the PC.

What PA device are you using?

I don't know what type of PA it is. Its pretty cheap whatever it is. I know it has a record out, but they are RCA jacks not 1/4 which my monitors are.

Also what is this talk about breaking the singal. Call me a newb, but I thought you were always suppose to plug the cable all the way in.

You can get or build an adapter to go from RCA to 1/4". Run the (2x) 1/4" into the Delta card.

that's one function of a channel insert. All the way in, it acts like an insert, but only first click, then it acts like a direct out. If your pa doesn't have channel inserts, then don't worry about it.

get (or make) an adapter like BH says, that should do the trick.

Ben, there should be a name and possibly a model number on the mixer somewhere. That would help imensly.

Maybe we can clear it up a little though with a couple of questions.

By powered they mean it will power your speakers without an additional amplifiere hooked to the main outs. Can your mixer do this?

If not then you may be allright using the main outs.
