Howdy Guys!!

Been a while .. I been mighty busy mixing/recording and starting gigging with the band ! WOOOOOOT...how I love to gig. First gig just 2 weeks ago with the current band as it is now and man did it rock...lovin it!

Anyways, on the back of this, I've just finished recording another couple of songs with the band.

Here's the first...I think, its the bands BEST song to date and possibly, the best recording I;ve made outwith the Cubase setup.

Here's the link: www.thedesmoinesriot.com/takeitall.mp3

Now, I done this ALL on the VF160. I used just 3 mics on the drums, 2 x 58's (1 on bass drum with NO hole in and 1 between snare / hat, both with the grille unscrewed as my makeshift 57!) and 1 studio projects pencil like condenser as an overhead. Vocals done with 58's ! (Im on lead gtr obviously and backing vocals).

All the rest was DI'd (bass/semi-acoustic) and my usual config for my guitar ... ye'll know it when ye hear it ;-) .. also a wee twist at the end where the usual screaming Les Paul solo goes...ye'll hear it too !

As for the mixing itself, that was all dumped FROM The VF160 into Cubase...so, Im quite happy with these results but as ever, the feedback of you good people goes a long way to determining what I change so, feel free to shout up with yer comments.

Cheers guys...

Coco.

Coco,

Listening to it on laptop speakers in an Arkansas resort with free high speed wireless internet...

Sounds Great!

Can't comment too much on the sonic nature of the song, but I love the song itself. The harmonica at the end made me moist in several places. Awesome touch!!

Can't wait to hear it on my good speakers!

Hey Guys

Cheers for the listen and the comments - all much appreciated for sure. Jim, you lucky dog getting yersel free hispeed web access whilst on hols!! Nice...

Aye Noize, the plan was to fire something a bit different in there so, the singer has a collection of harmonicas and thought he'd just mess around a bit, I found it in a take so, I kept it and used it....kinda like old style Aerosmith type vibe....a wee harmonica...very cool wee things those.

DungBeetle/Olddog - cheers for the time and thats all cool...will look forward to yer comments...

Cheers again y'all.

Hey Coco, cool song mate. Bit of a pastels vibe goin on there which is a very obvious thing to say with yer big flag flying next to your name i know! Thats whats i got though and its cool by me.

Real shout along chorus and i thought that lead going all the way through was gonna annoy but it didn't. Really enjoyed it.

Good stuff.

Cheers Mac...never heard the pastels (heard of em - old indie band from Glasgow I think) but aye, its always good to get comment on what peeps are hearing...cheers.

The lead...yep, I thought that too when I come up with it, then I thought , well, ya know, its pretty boring playing the same chords right thru it too, on 2 guitars, when there aint that many in the song to be honest so, glad that works (also , I love playin that riff!!)...kinda just flowed in naturally.

Cheers for the listen bud. Much appreciated.

Very live sound! I really like the lead vocal.
Clean, very present recording... Drums seem a little too forward to me, especially at the end. Guitar in the intro is a little bit out of tune... Kick drum and bass guitar could be punchier. There are some harsh frequencies coming though at about 0:54, could just be in the mp3. The hook is very, very cool, memorable and I enjoyed hearing it repeated...

Yep, the ending reminded me of some friends who were local around Minnesotta Wisconson The Hooters they were called. Still around I believe playing little bits here and there. The harmonica sounded definately like the hooter they used alot in their tunes. Nice little lick on that bad boy to bring in the ending.

Anyway, no harshness here. Probably just the mp3 as DungBeatle stated. Surprise, I enjoyed the vocals much better on this one for sure. The backing vox really reached out and grabbed hold. As usual the guitar is straight out fitting for the tune. I too liked the lead thing going all the way through.

I gotta agree you might try and punch that kick up a bit. The bass was a bit mellow but present. I blame the mp3 for that though as I have allready experianced the effect an mp3 can have on a killer low end sound.

The tune was very inspiring as well, much to like in that one indeed. But ya, those power vox on the chorus really got me.

May I ask who is singing the lead on this one?

Dung Beetle..cheers for the listen bud, comments noted an dmuch appreciated.

Noize, cheers for all that info too!! Surely much appreciated.

Aye, I tend to agree -the kick sounds rubbish...I think I fixed it now with a new version (I dropped off some of the compression and EQ'd it a bit different)...seems a bit better.

Glad ye liked the song, I consider it our best song and I personally love playing it the most out of our 10 songs...

The lead vocal is our singer Scott - he's the dude who was lead on all those other tracks you gave me all that feedback on a while back...I since discovered why he sounded so bad on so many by the way - I had indavertently been mixing late one morning and left on shedloads of EQ and Comp that shouldve been switched off (in Cubase) thus making him sound way tinnier and worse than he should have done !!!

So, aye, its the same dude singing buddy (He has the 2 lead vocal parts on the chorus) - I am on backing vox (panned left) and our bassist is also singing the same part panned right...

Anyways, cheers guys...am just about to use this as our lead track on the demo I use to try and score us a big festival gig ;-)

Yep this is a great one Coco, you guys really did a great job with this. The chorus is killer! It really is one of your best songs and recordings to date. I agree the kick could use some beefing up but that's about it, maybe lower the cymbals just a hair but that could just be my headphones. Really a nice mix, has alot of energy and punch!

This one just might be favorite from you with the band, really rockin'!

Cheers Dan for the listen adn the comments...much appreciated for sure my friend.

Aye, I like this one too .. it seems to be the best we've done so far (and encouragingly) the one that took me the least time to record and mix whihc is good...getting used to mic'ing drums with 3 mics, mixing the band and getting it all tidied up is getting easier all the time.

Cheers again bud - much appreciated

Coco,

Just now giving the song a proper listen on my home studio monitors...

Sounds great! A couple of nit-picky things that you might want to address: The lead vocal in the chorus gets a little quiet to my ears, as is the killer harmonica bit ear the end. The acoustic guitar part at the beginning is a nice touch, but I think it would sound even better if it were more natural sounding...mic'd up instead of recorded direct.

This truly is a great song. You guys really got something! I'm sure as you gain a little more exposure you'll attract quite a following in Edinburgh!

Rock on!!

great mix. nice crispy sound. I cant understand all the words.... (im a words guy) but i get the point. Love the harp- hope i had some influence! the guitar sounds were honed to perfection. just right. and the drums were very well recorded.
thumbs up from from here

Hey Jim

Cheers for the second listen and the feedback - much appreciated as always!

Agreed re: the harmonica, I reckon I'll move it more centre and fire it up a little in the mix, agreed its a bit off/low to my ears too...nice one!

Will look at the chorus as I really want a big chorus for this one...reckon the 3 harmony parts are EQ'd and sitting right but I will look at volume ... nice one again Jim.

RE: the intro, aye, possibly will redo that intro myself at some point but this one was needed for a comp to play a big festival this summer so, a quick DI job to do for now but aye, totally agreed bud - natural mic'ing would be better...

Cheers again Jim....appreciate yer time and comments!
