Mastering Setup

I've decided to start learning how to master and on what I think I need to start doing so. From everything I read here is what I plan to purchase and how I will use it. Any suggestions and input would be appreciated very much as I'm not entirely sure I know everything about it.

I record through my Presonus Firepod into Cubase SL 3.

I plan to get Har-Bal which I will run my mixed down wave from cubase through to balance the mix to sound best through any medium of speakers.

After which becase I can't afford a mastering program (been looking at wavelab for the future) I will open a mastering template in Cubase SL 3 and import the wave file after running it through Har-Bal where I will use the plugins in the Waves Native Power Pack including the eq and l1 maximizer.

Does this sound like a good set up?

Aside from the fact that you can't use plugins in HarBal it sounds like a good idea...

After HarBal you will probably only need the L1 maximizer to get the level maxxed.

But indeed, that sounds like you have a good start going there.

I didn't mean I would run the plug ins in HarBal, I meant I would run the file through HarBal, then import it back into Cubase to run the plug ins.

OK, cool, that'll work...

Since HarBal 2 I haven't even used the L1...

don't forget a good CD authoring program, EZ CD creator won't have the horsepower and featureset to tackle some mastering processes.

wavelab is what i use, but i hear there are a few other choice apps out there for that.

I am a WaveLab guy myself, but for many jobs, the free program, Audacity www.audacity.sourceforge.net would do the job as far as mastering goes, not CD authoring tho...

no authoring is when you create your own CD from your own music...

Is HarBal 2's limiter as good as l1? I'd really like to try to save as much money as possible.

It really depends on what exactly you need. I would say that for most home studio porpuses it is more then suitable.

Is it as good as the L1, well they are really 2 differant animals there. L1 is built with one purpose, and that is maximizing the wav file.

HarBal on the other hand can do several things L1 can only dream of doing.

Hope that helps ya a little. I know its not an exact answer, but its the best way I can describe it.
