Behringer Mixer Pre-amplification capablities....

Hi Friends,

I'm looking at picking up a pre-amp for a mic.
That's just when I heard about the UB1002FX mixer from Behringer.
I could sure make use of the mixer for its mixing capabilities.
My question is, is the preamp, built into the mixer, any inferior to a preamp I could buy in the market? Am I striking a compromise on the preamplification quality by choosing the UB1002FX instead of a dedicated mic preamp?

Thanks in advance, friends,
Ash...

Oh jeez, here we go, no shortage of debate on this subject...well, are they "inferior", depends on the definition. The preamps are less expensive, hell, the put 4 of them into a mixer that sells for $120 (or so, whatever)...it would stand to reason a dedicated preamp that sells for that same money would be better.

That said, I have a UB series mixer and the preamps work just fine. Are they the best on the market, no, are they usable, absolutely.

Zzounds price for the UB1002FX says $79.95... It has 2 mic preamps. You're not going to get super high quality nor any desirable character for that price, but they're probably clean enough. A dedicated mic pre can be very expensive, up in the $2,000 range for a great mono pre. I see the mic you have is the Shure PG58. Considering the mic you're using, you shouldn't be worrying too much about mic pres at this stage. Get the stuff you need... You need a mixer, buy a mixer...

Thanks dB Masters and DungBeatle for your prompt inputs.
You guys have really helped me decide :-).
The PG58 that I currently would be replaced.
Now that you have pointed out, DungBeatle , Would I need to worry about the Pre-amplification if my Mic is an SM57 or a Studio Projects B1. (This is to be my next question to you freinds at this forum).

The only time a preamp is going to come into play (well, start playing a bigger role anyway) is with more high end mics...if you need a preamp, and a mixer, I agree with Dung, buy the mixer, it has preamps in it that ARE usable, worry about better stuff later...

There are a number of people here that use Behris mixers... check out their songs to see if you like the sound we're getting . There are also a number of folks that use some pretty tasty dedicated pres... you could make some comparisons .

Or, get a Line 6 TonePort and use it's pres and preamp modeling...

My personal .02$us, if you're not spending over 500$ for a mic, then the mixer preamps will sound equal to hi $ standalone.

Don't worry about the better preamps, until you get a mic that can hear the types of differences you're talking about.

imho, ymmv, etc.
